are you respected at work? do they listen? do they take you as full? and how did you get there?

my way was to be 100 % honestly and to know when i have to be silent

  • SirG0

are you respected at work? Not really

    do they listen? not really

do they take you as full? not really

and how did you get there? don't know really... A boss always has his favorites and I guess I'm not one of them...

So currently I'm trying not the get into conflicts with him... Trying to keep a low profile... but is that the way to go? I can't believe that this is the way I'm gonna stay much longer in this company... So if anyone knows of a position in Belgium... lemme know :p

  • chubba0

    are you respected at work?
    Yes

I've found being honest and not bitching about anyone works....

  • sparker0

    respected? yes.
    listen? yes.
in full? sometimes, but any smart organization won't take the opinion of just one expert in full, it is best to colloborate with others on a problem (if you have that option).

    how?

by being an experienced, knowledgable expert in my given field. i don't cater to my own views on projects, i do what is best for the product. i simply know my shit and can back it up when asked. and, i don't care about trite bullshit that goes on. i focus on my work, not on what idiocy is plaguing the rest of the industry (read: psuedo-'community').

honesty is good. i ask each of my employees to be honest. if they don't understand something, don't know how to do it, then say so. we'll figure a way to educate them so they can. don't lie to get a project or role in the project and then half-ass it because you don't know what you're doing.

there is plenty i don't know, and i will say so. that is one of the keys to being an expert at something, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses and admitting to it.

Ok sparker but also consider thats how lots of people get their breaks and experience

They blag their way in even if they havent got all the skills and once in the deep end, they learn to swim.

If you dont get thrown in then youll never really learn.

Respect at work is all about maintaining a day to day consistency, both with the quality of your work and your relationships with the people you work with.

Respect comes with longevity and consistency.

I agree with honesty. honesty and objectivity (as much as its possible)

I promote honesty at work, always provide my true opinion when requested. In addition, I find that objectivity helps a lot. When I arrived at my current firm, there were tendencies to say "I like this" and "I don't like this" ... so I steered the ship to focus on "what works" and what doesn't. provoding clear explanation of why one feels these ways...

Aside from th work stuff, Environment guides a lot of inter-personal relationships. try to foster a good one.

"A boss always has his favorites and I guess I'm not one of them... "

    aint that the truth.

I recon im a v good designer, just no where near as keen as others, I take an hour for lunch go home on the dot, work to live not live to work, like most people here....

    fuck em

  • k0na_an0k0

are you respected at work? somewhat

    do they listen? not really

do they take you as full? i don't think so

and how did you get there? even with a little over 5 years business exp under my belt the suits here don't seem to take me or my work seriously. i think the problem is i'm working for a software development firm whom have never had any hands on experience with web design.

they don't seem to understand, or want to, the basic fundamentals of good web and print design. i.e.

them: "our corporate colors are red, black, and white."

me: (nicely)"actually your corporate color is red. black is a tint and white is a shade... not really colors, but that's no matter."

them: "whatever, just make the background of our website red and use white text."

me: (again nicely) "that puts a tremendous strain on the eyes and is a real no-no. we shouldn't do it."

    them: "just do it"

(after doing it a week later)

them: "jesus... i can't read this!?! why did you do this?"

me: "you told me to. it seemed that your degree in law somehow overwrote and had precedence over my degree and background in design. (as nicely as i could)."

so you can see where i'm going with this..

i agree, in part, seph...that is how most of us got some form of start...but there is a big difference in jumping in the deepend on a personal project or small scale 'first time client' deal and a large scale, mission critical software or database project.

when you write critical software that makes a business function day to day, the slightest problem can cost huge amounts of money for both you and the client/company.

i'm not a designer, so i'm sure it's bit different...it might be easier to fake your way into a layout or cover design...but i don't believe you can in the software and database field.

i also agree with the working environment. if your environment is crap, then your work generally starts to slip. the office has to be fun and light, especially when dealing with hardcore projects.

that's why we have a frisbee golf basket in here...

    :)

  • exador0

    are you respected at work?

    yes..very much

    do they listen?

    yep.

do they take you as full?

take me as full?..i actually don't know what that means..so ..uh..yeah..sure?...ok..

and how did you get there?

3.5 years ago when i got here, i was coming in from2 years as a senior designer downtown, and at a job i was treated horribly at..
when i got here, i knuckled down and got to work..producing my ass off, and trying to impress everyone..
    and i did...
and when i stopped to look, i realized i could relax..
i was hired here to be in charge of design...to be the AD..
they were EXPECTING me to be good ..
so i've been happy ever since..

the sales people love me here..
    :)

being self emplyed rocks in that way that my chain of command is only one person.
and i respect myself in the morning when i wake up :p

  • chubba0

love the sounds on your site pand4...

  • Bio0

respected - by those i care to be respected by, yes.

listened to - by those to whom i care to speak, yes.

    full? like exador... i guess.

how i got here - started dressing more professionally (though i refuse to take out my earrings) and realised that what i have to say IS worthy of speaking. and i DO know what the fuck i am talking about. once i figured out that i really am what i say i am, it just kinda fell into place.

i dont get ALL the respect i deserve or else i'd make a bit more cash, but that is fine. =)

  • pand40

tks :) i got them from the PBS and modified em a bit, i dont remember what they were called, but i can send you my copy

  • pand40

hey chubba.. you did work for knoll? i work for HM.. wanna fight :]

  • joyride0

Respect - I used to care if I got respect. Then I realized I wanted respect from people that didn't really matter. My clients Respect what I do. Thats enough, because they are the important ones. Don't confuse Respect with being Sudo-Famous in the design world. Alot of people do.

  • carver0

of course i'm respected at work, cos i' m the boss, i am a taskmaster over 8 individuals that work for me because they respect me, not because they want to be my mate and come to my house. they respect my experience, the knowledge i lend, my sense of humour, my courage, my strength, and my undeffatigability, BUT overall the undefinable sense of well being the exists when i walk into a room. don't get me wrong, i have experienced some employees that cared not for my regime, but their tenure did not last long, and even that was too soon for me.for me, i am the epitome of respect! Yo Respect!

  • Bio0

i think what you meant was "undeffatigabilitynessitudinous...

it's ok though, we forgive and respect you despite this gross error.

  • unknown0

    are you respected at work?
    For the most part yes.

    do they listen?
    Yes and No
do they take you as full?
    Yes

and how did you get there?
I work as a Receptionist at a mid sized law firm in Chicago, got the job through temping at this firm. While in such a position, it's a little easy to feel bottom of the barrel in the scheme of things, I see it as having tremendous responsibility, and such that doing my job well will bring respect, and has brought respect from all ranges of people here-staff, Associate Attorneys, Partners, Managing Partner.
As I see it, I'm responsible for our phones for over 120 employees in two offices (about 80 in our downtown office where I am) normal stuff like sending faxes, routing faxes, keeping track of people, dealing with clients in the office, and probably the most difficult-knowing the quirks and work nature of everyone who works here.
It would be easy to say "It's just a reception job" but if you feel good for the fact that you're a very integral part of the workday for everyone where you work, people depend on you and have high expectations of you, then it's worthwhile and enjoyable. I work with really wonderful people and it's a pretty fun place to work as well. (Some law firms are like a nightmare, so I've heard)
We're getting a ping pong table, fooseball and electronic darts by week's end! :D
