I have an older g4 350 mhz with 768 ram. It just recently started making a clicking noise sometimes especially when it seems to get bogged down.
Its sounds like:
click, click
click, click
click, clickTwo in a row like that. Anyone else experienced this or know what it could be?

Could be the Hard Drive. I had a 120 GB Western Digital that started clicking and 2 days later it was dead.
I'd open it up and stick your ear in there to see what it sounds like. If it sounds like the Hard Drive I'd start backing stuff up.

yes, backup as soon as possible! maybe it's not the hd, but you never know....

had the exact same model. if it is what i'm thinking it's your hard drive. the "needle" is picking up and dropping on the hard disk.
does it only happen after say 15 or so minutes of working on the computer? if so i'm right. it only happens when the hard-drive heats up.
shut down and wait for things to cool off. put in a "slave" hard drive and when you turn on the computer start copying like a madman. now it's only a matter of time when the hd shits the bed for good.

Thanks, OK. I have a few month old new 80 gig hd. And the old 10 gig one that came with it. I guess Ill have to listen to see which one it is. Anyone have a guess? I guess it could just as likley be the new one.
Can you open that computer when its on?

good luck CX.
may the force be with you,
- nh0
yes you can open the computer while it's on.

turn it on and open it up. when it starts to click place your hands on each hd to figure out which one it is. you'll be able to feel the click.

make sure to ground yourself before touching your harddrive though... static discharge isn't so kind to that sort of thing...
also be careful not to electrocute yourself.
and i agree, it's your harddrive

Thanks guys. I was hoping someone could pinpoint it by the description of the sound. 100% say its the harddrive so far. Thanks thats a big help. I thought maybe it was the processor or fan.
If its the old one it has the system folder and all my apps etc on it. If so is it as easy as backing it up, getting a new hd and just putting it all on the new one?
I guess I should change it before it totally goes out.
Thanks alot once again.

Anyone know the answer to my last question? ie:
If its the old one it has the system folder and all my apps etc on it. If so is it as easy as backing it up, getting a new hd and just putting it all on the new one?

You should switch the jumper on the drive as well. It probably came with the instructions for your newer harddrive.

i lost 20 mins of a 22 minute short film thanks to the same sound and a shitty IBM video raid drive.
backup yo shite

How can I tell which harddrive it is. They are stacked right on top of each other so I cant tell. Any ideas?
- pascii0
BACKUP!
then take one out and listen, then the other

try to back up your valuable shit first; then do the rest!

Damn I suck at working with hardware. I guess I couldnt just turn off the use of that harddrive on the computer itself? It only does it when its working hard.

oooh clickety click - it'll start beeping soon - that signals the end of HD... my 60Gb started clicking, then it beeped, then i watched OS slide down the screen like it was melting.. and bang - she was dead! and only just over a year old.
back-up, smack-up.
