So is there a way to check or shut one down it on the computer itself. Otherwise I think Im just going to unscrew one and hold it to my ear.

yes originally this was a notion only for Iomega drives, but the disease spread to Mac harddrives now...
sad but true.
come to think of it, I better get burning 30 DVD's this weekend... aaaargh.. cuz I have the very same drives. Justin Case, na meen?

If you have the 2 drives sitting on the desktop, just drag the second one to the trash (i.e. unmount it) then see if the clicking continues...
