Should everyone stop doing free work for next to nothing for friends etc? Do you think it may be hurting the industry?

doing pro bono work for friends doesn't hurt our industry. But taking pro bono jobs from Multi-national corporations will!
When I first started to do freelance work, I contacted my ex colleagues that work at Publicis (huge advertising agency) for possible freelance work. Well, a month ago they contacted me to work on an ad campaign, but said that since it was my first job with them, they wanted me to do the job for free, to test our relationship.
I told them No way. My time ain't free, especially when they make multi million dollar deals on a daily basis.
Botttom line is business guys only worry about the size of there fat wallets, and they don't care if they shaft and short change you. So don't sell yourself short and charge them through the roof.

my policy is that if the client stands to make money from my work, then i need to get paid. simple as that.
and i dont do shit on spec, "well if this project gets picked up we could all make a lot of money, but we cant pay you right now." Shit, if I want to take risks with my time and effort, I have plenty of my own inhouse projects.

Yeah some people feel very stongly that this is hurting the industry but it's not quite a black and white issue.
I used to do tons of flyers, for very cheap, but if I wanted the work and exposure I had no choice in terms of billing them, this is how much they have take it or leave it. There's alot of situations out there like that, to me if the project sounds interesting and will be good for my book then I'm very flexible with rates.
As well I like to do barter jobs where I can trade design for things like printing, furniture, home reno's, etc. I don't think I'm bringing the industry down by doing such.

When I do pro bono it's only for people/companies that need help they can't afford (yet) however it's important to write some kind of contract commiting them to use you whenever they got money. And also, I would never do stuff for free that I don't wanna use in my portfolio. I don't know if I do right or wrong but it works for me as long as I got paying clients as well. Pro bono work can be good 'therapy'.

pro bono reminds me of the movie 'ford fairlane: mr rock 'n' roll detective' :-D
He did investigations for Milli Vanilli and got paid with a coala. That would rock!
Hmm, he also got a pair of drumsticks, that suxors.

when i help a friend move i don't think it's hurting the moving industry.
when i eat an orange off a tree i don't think i'm hurting the farming industry.
far off examples but that's just crazy.... in fact it's exactly the opposite. people that are in need of pro bono to get their idea off the ground - if successful can create more and more work for many industries.
and you just might be the first inline for some payback if you're lucky.

i actually made a couple of websites for some friends of mine for their business..
they have returned the favor many times that would cost me top $$$$ so it's not a stupid idea at all

Pro bono for non profits is great, you can write off the 'gift in kind' and usually they are open to doing things differently.
wouldn't do it for a corporation except for friends and even then
