When I do pro bono it's only for people/companies that need help they can't afford (yet) however it's important to write some kind of contract commiting them to use you whenever they got money. And also, I would never do stuff for free that I don't wanna use in my portfolio. I don't know if I do right or wrong but it works for me as long as I got paying clients as well. Pro bono work can be good 'therapy'.
