I've found one of these to be pretty good. A sony vaio GRX. Link below.
Runs 1600x1200 a treat and photshops and flashs fine.
Go on... turn to the dark side my young apprentice

I have an alienware desktop which I jam on at home..and since it has lived up to it's hype I decided to go with the alienware m51.
It is a thick case, but has a desktop processor in it rather than a mobile. And it's a screaming 3.06 P4.
I highly recommend it. I have used max, premiere, and flash all without any problems or hang ups. Tough machine....
good luck

Well I know you are a PC user, otherwise you wouln't ask that question. My advice, get a mac, yeah, they are more expensive.. but you are going to use for design, not accounting.. :)

TitaniumG4; performance, batterylife, thin, light! Not to mention it makes all the pc users tremble in fear when you whip it out over at the local starbucks. Well worth it! Designers choice.

Speaking of saving money, I just got a Toshiba Satellite: P4 ,2.53GHz, 40GB HD for $1500
Haven't done any video on it yet, but kicks ass for graphics. No probs yet. Comes with XPhome edition though. You'll want to upgrade to Pro.

you'll want an extra battery and extra ram though.
my config:
powerbook 17
+ 512 MB extra RAM
+ extra battery(i got it all, plus free overnight shipping, plus free RAM install, plus no taxes for $3254.00 from http://www.MacWarehouse.com - ask for Dave Rosario in the Montreal Division and mention that I sent you.)

Dell inspiron 8500, or wait for the centrino model. (go to the new latitude serie)

Just ordered Thinkpad T40p (2373G1U).
battery lasts for around 7 hours (tested by anandtech, not IBM's numbers) due to a higih compacity battery and new centrino CPU.
Benchmarks place it above a 2.4 Ghz. P4 Desktop. Video card is 64 meg ATI 9000 Fire GL (OpenGL workstation class card officialy certified by 3dsmax, softimage, etc... Has overlay support and so on).
The thing weighs 4.9 pounds, is a inch thick, and is supposedly as durable as a tank. Comes stock with 512megs ram, 5400 RPM HD, USB 2.0, Bluetooth, a/b wifi, SXGA+ screen etc. In my eyes (or rather on paper) this looks like the best notebook I have seen to date, period, and should be more than ample to work with design on.I had a TiBook previous to this, but found it to be very underpowered, and delicate (flimsy - I dont care how strong titanium is, this notebook is not durable). The screen was beautiful, but scratched easily because of the notebooks build (when you close the lid, the screen presses against the keyboard and trackpad). I did however love OSX.

To add to the last post...
i dont want to make it look like Im slamming Apple, I think they have some great stuff brewing over there..
but thats the point, brewing. With the new OS, and new hardware in development (a shift away from Motorola over to 64bit IBM PPC 970 or 980 is coming very soon) once this happens, there will be major fratures along Apples entire line. Im sure software companies are under a lot of pressure trying to keep up with the many changes apple has been and will be throwing at them in the near future.
I'm not saying I will never own an Apple again, as I hope to. However, by the looks of things, its best to give them a year or two to get their OS and Hardware in order first.

I got an old Powerbook which I bought back in like '99. It's hard to believe it's already been 4 years, 'cause I still use it and it's still ok for the stuff I do. I don't run OSX, but I run all the latest versions of flash, photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, etc. It could definetely be faster, but c'mon, it's really old. It's only 333mhz, with 500 ram but it still chugs along.
I was considering buying one of the new 12 inch powerbooks and a separate desktop flatpanel display for home use. Those are great little machines. But I realized I don't quite need it yet. I think I'm going to wait for that coming shift of chips from Motorola to Intel. That should be interesting and from what I understand, should get rid of the problem with the slow Flash player.
I don't recommend an ibook since they still use the G3 chip, and that's on its way out. Not even the imacs use them anymore.Among PC users, Dell seems to be favored along with Vaios.

Titanium all the way! Its sexy, sleek, lightweight, and oh yeah, it's a great computer too! Sure its expensive, but I am fully convinced that you get what you pay for, at least in this case.
