Deciding...
3000$ (average) Mac
or 3000$ (f***in' powerful) PC..?
- lament0
i know i'm probably in the minority for designers, but I'm PC all the way. and for $3000, you best have a GeForce 4 Ti4600 video card and 1 GB of RAM. :)
- frankbb0
wait for the new geforce card .. better than geforce 4 .. i have one not that great.. radeon is better..
get nforce2 or dual Xeon depending..
get scsi as well..
- nope0
buy what you can afford and what can do the most for you.
seriously, i hate these mac vs pc threads..it's like coke vs pepsi.
- frankbb0
coke..
but then I thought about when I was young, my first fizzy drink was pepsi..
oh the memories.. flooding back now..

I'm on a PC at the moment because Motroloa dropped the ball on the G5. IBM's scaled down Power4, the p970s are alitvec-compatible. Anyway, I have every faith they'll be in the newest Macs to come mid/late 2003. 64-bit addressing, I'm waiting for the new Macs...patiently. If I were you I'd put 2,000 more together and get an Apple beast later this year. ;)
But you buy a Mac for environment, not power (God, I hope this changes soon). Honestly, I really just find working on a Mac so much more pleasant--OSX is a joy.
It's really just, well, up to you. :)

or save another 2000 and buy a killer PC later in the year as well...
i'd suggest working a little on both machines to see which you liked better.
i now work on a PC regularly but it took me a longtime of waffling to determine that...and i still miss the mac for certain things...
now it's more like buying a car...if you buy the minivan, you're gonna miss things that you didn't get the half ton sometimes...and viceversa...
pros and cons...as always.
but most of the big things that desginers need: stability, accessability, and power...are there on both systems now.

this is the most thoughful mac or pc thread ive seen.
- surfito0
my suggestion is, have them both.
its like a wife and a lover

yeah, i agree with surfito, both. If you look around, secondhand macs arn't to hard to come by (I picked up a G3 tower for $400 aus) and a decent PC wont cost you $3000

Heres my advice.
PC.
Why? Im not going to start some fucking PC/MAC debate because of stability of architecture or how cool (or uncool) the computer itself works.
I have a PC. And everyone with a mac can only do 50% of what i can do. And its a fact. I have an advatange over every mac designer out there. And I get more business because of it.
but hey... macs look cool. at least you got that going for you...

sub, that's some ridiculous crap dude. I'm not even giving my two cents.
:)

There are a few factors here. I use Flash all the time and even though I've never been on a PC, I hate that Macs run Flash about 40% slower. Another thing, I don't think the price ranges quoted in the beginning of this thread were accurate. $3000 is only average for a Mac, if it's a G4 tower. $3000 for a PC would really be a killer machine.
I wish I had more to contribute, but I don't use PCs, so I can't judge them very well.

ha ha... im not trying to start a fight man
im just saying support for the windows architecture is so much better that i can a million things that only mac users cant do. unless they have a PC and know how to use it, and have the tools to author on it. I have a mac and program for that too, but the possibilities for the PC are so much greater. Ive done numours projects that just couldnt be done on a mac (for the same budget) and can offer so much more to my clients (who are PC users)
but hey, macs make great doorstops. and thats something right?
:)

man, if i cant spell i wont get any business. (i only had about 10 spelling errors in there)
- powmonkey0
People talk as if their machine designs for them. I'm pretty sure my design talents would still be there no matter what platform I worked on. I prefer mac.
At the end of the day it's who sits infront of the thing.
Put it this way, you could have the ultimate computer on your desk that does everything at super speeds and it cost you next to nothing, but if you suck at design, a beast box aint gunna change shit.
Back to the thread... Buy what suits your needs and budget dude.
- quamb0
subaddiction- that IS ridiculous crap.
i have both a pc and a mac, where i find my mac is used far more then the pc. it depends on the person and the circumstance. (so far my mac is great for audio and video work, though PC is far better for web work)
what was a semi-intelligent thread on what to get for $3000, inevitably is spoiled by some narrow minded pc backlash. *sigh*

read and learn my young padded apprentices

more like mac vs pc, there is no discussion. another biased , badly designed page.
- sweetas0
did you try "learn more"? stacks of discussion from all sorts of online sources on every topic - you're right, it is bias, but at least I'm not trying to say my dick is bigger than yours
