i wanna know why kylo ren wears a mask with a voice synthesizer in it.

    just to be intimidating?

    does it do anything?

    • hmm good point, maybe because he's the dark side's version of this guy?
      http://funnyphotobuc…
      _niko
    • I think he's too young to be feared or taken seriously really, he ends up coming off as annoying more than anything...just like young anakin, whiny little shit_niko
    • my guess is he's just trying to be like grandpa since i don't think he would need it as functional armor as powerful as he isscarabin
    • because he's a pathetic insecure emo with dad issues - why the fuck do you think?fadein11
    • jesus man, who needs to chill out now?scarabin
    • ha - do you really think he would have been a good baddy with his normal whiney voice?fadein11
    • there's no shortage of bad guys who don't wear masks in movie history. i think it'd be possible to make one more, yesscarabin
    • sorry for wondering if there's more story behind it. hahascarabin
    • faswin... you talk as if he's a real person... its a fictional charactor played by actor...pango
    • fadein...pango
    • there will be a mask regardless who plays kylo. hey could have had another who's all scared up and evil as hell looking.pango
    • the synthesizer's there not because he has a whiney voice.pango
    • i think the synthesizer sound like voice is a default thing with those helmet since all storm trooper sound like they are talking into a radio speaker.pango
    • hmmmm - SW main villain without mask looking like an upset teenage emo with dyed hair - doubt that would have worked somehow. sozfadein11
    • you could say it bad casting but regardless, there will be mask.pango
    • he's more intimidating with it on for surescarabin
    • He wears it as an intimidation tactic. He wants to be feared and powerful like his granddad, yet he's still inexperienced and insecure.jagara
    • And not in control (temper tantrums etc.). He's basically a wannabe sith. JJ said his character is still forming.jagara
    • And his home-made light saber is producing a uneven, ragged blade compared to the one Finn uses. Which is a nice touch.jagara

Star Wars 7: Knights of Ren Mystery Solved

    • Anyone notice how ray's staff looks a lot like the staffs the dudes/dudettes are carryingburd-turglar
    • this theory sucks.inteliboy
    • Which theory. The ewok thing?burd-turglar
    • My guess is luke encountered the staff dude and took the staff and gave it to rei. Why would luke give farms ode weapon to rei? I don't know.pango
    • Or maybe Reis staff is just a normal staff with no significance...pango
    • The powered off saber may be Vader's? Retrieved from Luke. Now behind a glass display in kylos basement.pango
    • *farmes ode = dark side
      I don't even know how...
      pango
    • Lol, yea I was wondering what the fuck that was supposed to meanburd-turglar
    • So I tend to think what drove Luke to fail as kylo's master was that he had a love child with one of his apprentices that went on to become one of kylo's knightburd-turglar
    • Of ren. And that ray is Luke's kid by one of lukes' fallen apprentices, and that it is all lukes' fault for submitting to his desire, Kotor styleburd-turglar

Also, I meant to say this: as I watched the film it was so clear that my time with star wars was back when I was a kid. Those movies were for me and we enjoyed the hell out of it as kids.

Our time is over and its time for new kids to love and enjoy the new fix. these movies are for them, not us anymore.

Good luck trying to top Empire Strikes Back! :)

    • Well this is true. These movies arent make for us. Every kid in my theater loved this movie. Some of the adults... meh on it.CygnusZero4
    • Yep - 2nd time in I tried to watch as a child more I think that's why I let it's problems go more.fadein11
    • But then I watched parts of OT over Xmas - still far superior... the debate goes on :)fadein11
    • It goes on mainly for you and Cygnus. Many of us have moved on with life :)ETM
    • Well, i disagree. Pixar, for instance, are great at making their movies for all ages. There are layers for the kids, and layers for the adults.jagara
    • Thus, the appeal is very broad. The same with Star Wars.jagara
    • But i definitely found TFA appealing a bit more to kids than adults. Still, i enjoyed them. It still did'nt touch the originals.jagara
    • Quality-wise, i mean.jagara
    • @ETM - moved on yet still comments lol.fadein11

Okay was avoiding this place for over a week, trying to avoid spoilers. lol Finally saw it. Loved it. Shead a tear or two. Don't judge me. :D

    • it's a fun movie :)scarabin
    • It really is. Beautiful camera work. Those scenes when Rey feels the force, made me feel like a kid again. :)sea_sea
    • right? you know you were scrunching your face: cmon force! cmon force!! lolsofakingback
    • Yep! Lolsea_sea
  • scarabin6

^ yeah i see people nitpicking the shit out of it and complaining about realism and whatever but they gloss over the fact that it's a space fantasy with a fucking hairy bear man driving a spaceship, a talking trashcan and a group of wizards whose magic is fueled by being pissy about things. if people would just relax a bit they'd enjoy it a whole lot more :)

    • fucking lol @ anyone sitting in the theatre not having a great timescarabin

There are at least six different car TV commercials with a Star Wars theme and then all end with a stupid "Stars Wars" playing in theaters now.

    • "all of them"utopian
    • They have to end that way if they want to use the brand. Happy Christmas.bumdrizzle

Is this thing about Rey being Lukes daughter a spoiler? It was mentioned in force awakens! Maz says to her, "Whoever youre waiting for, theyre never coming back. Your belonging is not behind you, its a head of you."

And then Rey says, "Luke". Uhhhhhhh..... lmao

    • i didn't pick that up at allscarabin
    • oh, this is why; that's not what was said https://www.reddit.c…scarabin
    • The ACTUAL dialogue does not make it clear. Thanks for that link scarabin.ETM
    • @scarabin - see my notes on your earlier rant below.fadein11
    • Do you people even read? What I wrote is exactly what was said.CygnusZero4
    • The instant I saw this scene in the theater I knew who she was, and she even said LUKE! LMFAOCygnusZero4

Why does Princess General Leia sound like a man?

Is it because she went from a Princess to a General?

    is that called method acting?

  • CygnusZero4-1

I'm realizing something about what happened during the writing process. So I just watched that long interview with both of them from this past sunday, and yet again, JJ talked about how he wanted some more details in this movie, but Kasden kept pushing back and making him remove the details, saying things like, "You dont need all that... trust the audience".

I'm sure that was to avoid overly explaining things like the prequels did, but still, there really needed to be sprinkles of more information in this movie. The fact that some aspects of it are literally impossible to understand unless you either read the novel or go on reddit, isnt great movie making to me.

    • likely after three movies all these details will fall into place nicely, widened scopeprophetone
    • like snape in potterprophetone
    • You should ask Disney to let you direct Episode VIII.jtb26
    • i have, they said lolprophetone
    • Agreed, for example: phasma could have easily said fin was her top cadet and was a natural born leader and skilled soldier. Instead he looks like a washout kid.sofakingback

    Fucking LOVED it!

Loads of nostalgic excitement when old characters are revealed, exciting, fun, funny, emotional.

Could have done with a touch more back-story behind characters to add , and a swapping Kermit the Frog (or someone of equal credibility) for that 3-D bobblehead giant. Also, I know it's been ages but death star, trenches and hitting a target while chased by Tai fighters again?? We don't need nostalgia on a storyline thanks, just the characters

Still, fuckit - 5 stars from me

  • CygnusZero42

Watched it for a second time last night. The movie moves a little slower the second time so thats good, its still super brisk though with very little time to breathe.

Still have most of the same problems though. Snoke is super corny and feels like a Harry Potter villain. Should not have been CGI. Idk how theyre going to make this ugly cgi villain work in 2 more movies where he will need to be featured a lot more, especially in a saber fight with a real human.

Some of the dialogue is lame as fuck. At the end in the forest, and Kylo is like "this isnt done". Dude is not a great actor lol. He's just kinda meh in this movie. I still would have preferred them to keep his mask on. As soon as it comes off it pulls me out of the movie. Major overacting at times by the black dude. Turns all ghetto on Phasma and Im like, come on man, this is star wars, not sister act 2.

    • can you please shut up now, we get it.
you don't like it. you are probably in shock after spending the most part of the year in eager anticipation.
      Bluejam
    • the disappointment will pass.
      Happy christmas!

    • don't be so hyped next time, less dissapointmenternexbcn
    • Seeing it again in 3 hours Cyg - really hoping I like it more. The fools don't realise how disappointed we are ha. I was so excited for months :)fadein11
    • So it seems everyone here generally liked it, even for its flaws... except CygnusZero4 and fadein11.ETM
    • ^ not a big fan of what borderline felt like a made for tv movie at times.CygnusZero4
    • put any star wars movie under this kind of scrutiny and it will "suck"scarabin
    • in epIV yoda didn't look any more real than snoke, luke shouldn't have been named "skywalker", and he shouldn't have been "hidden" on anakin's homeworldscarabin
    • the dialogue was clumsy, leia was an empty, lifeless shell of a character, the stormtroopers were slapstick buffoons... i could go onscarabin
    • @scarabin don't you start on the original trilogy, they're sacred :-PBluejam
    • yeah, their flaws are forgivable because they were fun. TFA is also a fun movie. it just seems like folks are nitpicking it like it's citizen kane or somethingscarabin
    • yeah honestly, I just finished watching ROTJ last night, absolutely ridiculous, from acting to effects to story to costumes, it makes TFA look like godfather 2_niko
    • Sister act 2.. LOL.. goldautoflavour
    • I agree mostly but it's not like they'll have a hard time making snoke fight with a lightsabreset
    • @scarabin Don't get me started on Citizen Kane! :)ETM
    • lolscarabin
    • All the movies had bad dialogue. Leia and Han talking about scoundrels as if they're in a Clark Gable movie. Hayden Christian's lines were notoriously bad.CyBrainX
    • I think this movie had less issues with dialogue. I just think it was a little slow in the first half. I was a little bored before Han showed up.CyBrainX
    • it's a remake of star wars 1977.
38 years later. 2h of joy in 2015.

can we quit crying about it getting "cut in half"? it's the same length as every other star wars movie.

    • it's actually one of the two longest episodes.scarabin
    • sorry, *fourscarabin
    • I think it was probably cut - final length is irrelevant - my point was it needed 15-30mins of slower paced stuff to build suspense.fadein11
    • you can see a lot of shoe-horning in it.fadein11
    • v.little suspense in it which is odd for a SW movie.fadein11
    • True, more a pacing issue than a runtime issueburd-turglar
    • Yup, agreed, too consistent and evenformed
    • if you mean it never got boring, yeah i agreescarabin
    • there was plenty of pacing contrast, rey scavenging for example was a lot slower and intimate than say, a star fight. and the scene with han and kyloscarabin
    • was primarily characterized by suspense. did you even see the movie?scarabin

    • lol. no, it isn't. and nothing i've said comes even close to how worked up you've gotten in other exchanges on qbn lately. again with the ironyscarabin
    • Well I hope you find it in your heart to forgive me for verbally attacking you by calling you sparkles lol, get a gripburd-turglar
    • pointing out your hypocrisy isn't the same as giving a fuck. don't worry, i won't hold it against you.scarabin
    • Seeing as how you argued with me for 200+ posts not too long ago, I fail to see how you have any moral high ground here sparklesburd-turglar
    • you fail to see a lot of things. i still forgive you.scarabin
    • Thank goodness for that sparky, glad to hear that my viscious verbal assault didn't wound you too deepburd-turglar
    • already said it's cool man, don't make this awkward. you're kind of being creepy nowscarabin
    • Isn't that horrible, first I assault you verbally and now I've made you feel akward, oh the injustice, how ever will you copeburd-turglar
    • i'm sure i'll survive somehowscarabin
    • Scarabin - you do need to chill out - people are entitled to have a different opinion than you - and let's face it you watched it on acid - are you sure you hadfadein11
    • a grip of pacing in the film, acid plays with temporal cognition in some funny ways. Just chill out - yes you loved it. It was good. But could have been evenfadein11
    • better with some more attention to cinematic foundations such as plot, pacing and character development. But yes - as I said my rating went up to 7/10 afterfadein11
    • viewing again. Are you even a Star Wars fan? Because you are in the minority for not noticing a few of it's lazy faults.fadein11
    • yeah, i host a star wars RPG every week at my place and build lightsabers in my spare time. i just don't agree that pacing was an issue, and i feel thatscarabin
    • mirroring the original films actually help save the series instead of being a writing crutch. i'm also aware of exactly how acid effects me and in general thatscarabin
    • effect is one of increased attention to detail and an immunity to the effects of sleepiness. i think being tired watching the film at 1 am had more of an effectscarabin
    • on people than my low dose of acid did. people are cranky, tired, hazy, stood in line for too long, whateverscarabin
    • i'm cool with your 7/10 rating– the movie was just a fun space fantasy. it's the 4/10 business that blows my mindscarabin
    • i also avoided all trailers and teasers, articles, etc about the movie beforehand so i went in with no expectations. many others had the hype get the bestscarabin
    • of them only to be let down.scarabin
    • okay - that's cool - just feel you seem to only be open to one opinion on things - yours. lol. Laterz, Enjoy the rest of the festivities.fadein11
    • i agree i came on a little strong, my bad. it's just a movie after all.

So, saw A New Hope 2.0 yesterday.

    Some poorly organized preliminary thoughts:

I was thoroughly entertained all the way through. The two hours flew by. I admit to being completely captivated from the first moment.

Kylo Ren and Rey (and to some extent, Finn) are great characters (Daisy Ridley stole the show!). Supreme leader Snoke was the most generic-looking villain I've seen in a long time.

The tempo is rushed. Wanted more quality time with the new characters. The story is a bit too simple for my taste, and leaning WAY too much on A New Hope. The dialogue frequently insulted my intellect. John Williams had his intern do the soundtrack.

It's all exactly what I expected. Adequate, competent, playing it (mostly) safe. Lazy in places. A good experience all in all. A worthy successor? Let me think some more.

    4/6 stars
