ok..... time to wake breathe the outside air....
but to fanboy-historian-ify a bit, you could say...
OK, Empire Strikes back was made in the late 70's, right after the Vietnam War, and the parallel between the "empire's full spectrum dominance of battlespace" and the US's "nuclear weapons capibility" being not so useful in a ground war amongst civilians in an unfamiliar environment using weapons designed for other situations .... i.e. vietnam in the jungle = that planet with the rebels...

o Flag as inappropriateHave you even served with the Imperial forces? Sure it's easy to take potshots from your military blog in some no-name star system while the fleet and its legions fight the rebel insurgents, but combined space/air/ground operations are a lot messier than any infographic could ever portray.
Even with the Empire's full spectrum dominance of the battlespace, you can't just leverage fleet assets which are optimized for ship-to-ship combat into a large scale ground invasion force. A Star Destroyer might have more firepower than the entire militaries of less advanced worlds but you still need a proper ground assault ship to support infantry landings.
Unfortunately, the do-nothing blowhards in Coruscant couldn't get funding for the promising alternative designs from Sienar Fleet Systems and we ended up (as usual) with Kuat Drive Yards' overpriced, overdue, and underperforming AT-AT mess.'

"Only Vader can’t bombard the base: He’s in it. For reasons that never get explained — and can’t be justified militarily — Vader joins the Stormtrooper assault on the base. So much for his major weapon against the Rebels, and the primary reason for ordering the Walkers to invade and destroy the generator. Once Vader opts to bring down the shield and lead the invasion, he’s lost the battle."
these guys don't know what they are talking about. The reason Vader didn't want to completely destroy the base AND went inside was that he was looking for Luke. He was looking for Luke for years. Mara uncovered records that showed Vader had been scouring the universe for his son. After the Rebels fled Pol minor for Hoth, Vader received intel from Thrawn stating that is where their next makeshift base would be.

12:57 PM ET'Star Wars' spin-offs: A young Han Solo movie, and a Boba Fett film -- EXCLUSIVE

Comments 391Add commentStar Wars fans, admit it: you like scoundrels. And you’re about to get more of them in your life.
Yesterday, The Walt Disney Co. unveiled plans to make a number of spin-off movies set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away — in addition to the post-Return of the Jedi trilogy that had already been announced.
Entertainment Weekly has learned details on two of the spin-off projects: A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum.

Several sources close to the projects confirmed this was the direction the development was taking, although each cautioned it’s still very early in the process and, well, the deal could always be altered futher. Lucasfilm and Disney declined to comment on the information.
The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

It's always the same nerd-friendly directors that are thrown around...
Abrams Star Wars will be derivative but slick, with set-piece stiched to set-piece with a bunch of good looking Americans fighting CGI monsters. You'll have a good time but feel empty at the end of it.
Whedon's Star Wars will look boring and lack any sort of imagination, though have really great character work and good looking Americans. You'll walk out smiling, though it wasn't a good movie.
Zack Snyder's Star Wars will look great though too CGI, and have poor character work, but he'd get the gritty aspects of the Star Wars universe. You'll be unsure on what the hell you just saw, but it was cool.
Nolan's Star Wars will have a clumsy narrative, but feel epic in scope and have some interesting themes brewing behind the dull action. You'll feel like you've just seen a masterpiece, when it really isn't at all.
I'd much rather see someone like Paul Greengrass, David O Russell, David Yates etc tackle it... and get Winding Refn or Michael Mann to come in on the last one for the darker epic finale. Not that this would ever happen... or they'd nail it, but it would at least be interesting and not predictable.
- Replace "star wars" with "next 4 movies" and this is spot on.albums
