Night Terrors

Does anybody else get these? I think that's what I'm experiencing. I had one two nights ago and I usually get one every few months or so. They're incredibly intense. It's hard to explain... I think you're aware but your REM sleep cycle has not finished yet... so you're physically paralyzed in your nightmare state. The line between awake and asleep becomes blurred. This paralyzation is usually accompanied by visions of an evil black shadow at the foot of the bed or just over your shoulder, and a blindingly loud whooshing noise... in some of my cases anyway.

It's an incredible feeling of helplessness and pure horror because of the paralysis of your body. You can't react to what's going on around you (or what you're imagining is going on around you).

In this most recent episode, I heard a thud outside my bedroom door, so I bolted out of bed and opened the door. I saw nothing but darkness except for a heavy breathing sound in front of my face. I'm standing there in front of my door and become instantly paralyzed. I try to raise my left hand to protect myself, but can only barely get my fingers up. Just standing there for what seems like an eternity, at the mercy of this dark force in front of me.

Thing is, I can't tell if this actually happened or if it was all mental. Was it 100% a dream, or did I actually get out of bed? I still don't know. I never know.

I seemed to have discovered what triggers them. Before falling asleep, if I'm simply sleeping on my back with my arms to my sides, I'll likely have one. Good thing I'm mostly a side sleeper.

In a messed up way, it's fun. I remember during one episode I was encouraging, even daring, the "demon shadow" to fuck with me and laughing like a crazy demented fuck. It was like a role-reversal, and I was becoming the evil one.

Use to happen to me when I was an adolescent,
    it's often just sleep paralysis,
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sle…

but if you want to dig a little deeper,
place a bible on your right and a cross on your left,
at the four angle of your bed, place a cup with holy water,
before going to bed, dare the fucking evil spirit to come in your room by calling him a wee cunt,
    sleep tight

i've experienced sleep paralysis. no nightmares or demons with it though.

  • inteliboy0

Definitely sleep paralysis. The whoosing sound is likely an interpretation of your breathing or snoring. Try not to sleep on your back.

Sometimes I get it, these evil deep growling demons talking in my ears, shadows in the room, an intense need to move and wake up. An overwhelming sense of fear. I slowly start to try and focus on something, like my breathing or the feeling in my toes -- gradually waking up as everything kind of drifts back to normal.

When I was young I thought it was ghosts. I woke a friend up once in the middle of the night because I saw a ghost kid standing in the room Now that I know it's sleep paralysis, it's still terrifying, though now also fascinating - I've had apparitions float away like smoke right before my eyes. It's crazy.

    • I saw a ghost kid in my room too! (in a dream I mean, but I felt like I was awake. kid was standing upside down next to my closettheredmasque
    • next to my closet. Freaked me out! loltheredmasque

I've had this many times but no black shadow.
    Incredibly intense.
I have actually flown around my room once - was so realistic I thought it happened for a while after.
I found these occurred when I had been playing a little too hard at the weekend, usually got them on a Tuesday.
I have loads - and the feeling of paralysis yet being awake ( or not who knows) is terrifying.
I also know what you mean about it being kind of enjoyable - its more intense than real life so there is something enjoyable about it.

    • sounds like you've done a little bit of projection!23kon

I've had this experience, but they were with some weird thing I see that doesnt belong to our normal conscious world.. and when its really intense, somehow the thing I dreamed of, lets say.. a spider.. shows up when I wake up!
This is horrible... you wake up, and you look at the corner of your bed, and the thing you dreamed of is right there in your bed... so of course, you dash out of bed, leave the bedroom, the house and et! But then you come back very slowly and realize it was in your dream....
    That was intense..

The exact same thing you describe, happened to me often when i was younger, with the black shadow and everything, i thought it was breathing disorder ( i can barely take breath during the whole thing) but it looks like i was wrong.

I used to be really interested in Astral Projection and had a load of books on the subject and followed their instructions to attempt to achieve projection.

One of the steps is to be able to hold yourself between the state of awake and sleep whilst still remaining concious.

Some people experience the paralysis that you are talking about and the books tell you to focus on something and try to gain control of the situation. You are only scared because it is an unfamiliar situation and feeling.

This is as far as I got with Astral Projection as the paralysis freaked me out. I was a teen at the time and can remember calling out for my parents and no voice coming out but being awake and completely paralysed.

I'd say you are lucky if you can get into this state without all the relaxation techniques and visualisation techniques that would normally be needed to achieve this.

I say embrace it, read up about Astral Projection or Real World Projection. You never know, pretty soon you might be able to project yourself to the bedroom of the hot chick next door ;)

    • ha - yep I read some books as a teen - was hard to achieve thoughfadein11
    • yeah, i've tried to scream and call out for help, but nothing comes out. it's freaky.CanHasQBN

I had night terrors when I was a youngster - I think they were more concerning for my parents, I didn't really remember them so much .. the weirdest thing about them, is that the person experiencing them usually doesn't remember what's going on. They're talking as if they're awake - but will be asleep; so they're seem a bit like a zombie .. which can be quite frightening for anyone who's totally awake.

I've had sleep paralysis a couple of times since, which is pretty genuinely scary. I find it feels like you almost have to fight your own body to wake up.

    • That's exactly what it's like.. fighting your own body to wake up.CanHasQBN

i have sleep paralysis quite often (actually last time was a couple of hours ago), but without any visions. since i read a lot about it, it became less terrifying and in most cases i am aware of what is going on and just wait until it is over. because when starting to struggle panic and nightmares emerge.

@23kon, I would like to give you some tips how to achieve it more easily and with more control but it would be too long to write down here,
one way my friend and I would achieve it faster, was to hyperventilate ourselves and fall in a unconscious state, it was quite fuckn dangerous you'll say but if you do it right in controlled environment, with the right people, you could learn what take years to master in a few weeks,

one of the weirdest thing I gained from it was the capacity to wake up from a "bad" dream, then go back inside it, only if I don't fully wake up though.

(disclaimer: don't ever try it by yourself)

  • 23kon0

    Georges,
20 years or so ago when I was at High School, hyperventilating yourself to cause a faint was all the rage haha.
Never tried it and never will.
After my paralysis scare I never tried Astral Projection again.
I do have quite good control of my dreams though and most of the time can recognise when i'm in a dream then have some fun rather than going along with the preset story.

    • Just like drugs, you take LSD by itself you'll love it, but stupid people will drink and take LSD, same with hyperventilating, it's not a thing to be taken lightlyGeorgesII
    • not a thing to be taken lightlyGeorgesII

There was a month when i used to have that experience 3 times a week. It was so often i got tired of it. I pretty much when, "fuck it! do whatever you want. i'm just gonna sleeping". And it worked! O fell right back to sleep when i stop paying attention to it.

    • yup. it gets more annoying than anything after a while. You just want to sleep!dopepope
  • dopepope0

happens to me every 3 weeks. Exactly as you described. I actually see more defined figures forming around me as it happens. Usually a regular dream progresses into something more and more frightening and intense, then I come out of it into that half awake, half asleep phase, and see demons and tall figures in the shadows. It's overwhelmingly terrifying, especially when they push on me or grab at me. One time I was pushed from my chest deep into the bed. I thought I was going to be crushed to death. But there was no pain. Just pressure. key is to not panic and relax. It all goes away and is fine. It's actually quite interesting once you realize it's nothing serious.
