I spent a couple of days in Split, so no real help to you, but it's worth considering a visit there, it's brilliant.

Dubrovnik, Split and Pula are an absolute must. Zagreb is nice, but kind of sleepy. Also, if you have the time, go down the coast past Dubrovnik into Montenegro, and see Herceg Novi, Kotor and Bar. All are brilliant.
- Oh, and the Croatian islands are amazing, too.Continuity

what time of year are you going?

^ no dates set as yet, probably between end of spring - end of summer.

Others here will probably know more about this than me, but I went fairly early in the summer season and found that things along the coast hadn't quite kicked into gear (water taxis, boat trips, hire places, nightlife etc).
If you're going in spring then heading inland while the temperature is barable and the hills are green might be a good idea. I think lots of people spend the winter in zagreb and come back to the coast for summer. I heard there was lots going on in Zagreb up until it gets hot.
Either way, definitely go to some of the islands, either on your own hired boat or an excursion. Krka waterfalls as mentioned in the other thread are beautiful. Trogir's a great place for dinner. Split's good for bars/clubs.
It's impossible to fuck it up though, really. Great place.

bump. spending a few weeks in croatia / the eastern bloc soonish. recommendations? will be staying primarily in zagreb but i can get to the coast
- zagreb is grey. that's all i remember of it. we spent a couple of weeks near split, in a town called drnis, among the minefields.hans_glib
- had a decent time, sibenik, trogir, popped down to mostar, all good. wine expensive, food a little monotonoushans_glib
- Agree the food can be underwhelming, considering how close to Italy. And the same menu everywhere. Fresh fish places are the best.Fax_Benson

we were there when football tournament was on so there was an unpleasant, aggressive, hyper-nationalistic vibe.
we got ripped off in Split.
Dubrovnik was nice for about an hour until 3 cruise ships arrived and about a billion italian tourists crammed the streets.
Enjoyed Zagreb but only stayed a day as we decided to get out of croatia.
we much preferred Bosnia and Slovenia.
although, everyone I know enjoyed Croatia, the islands especially.

Stick to the coast. Start by visiting Pula and spend a day in Kap Kamenjak, Premantura (The nature reserve..).
Opatija is very nice and has excellent but expensive hotels with great wellness offerings. Drive south to Zadar for a day and plan some time for Dubrovnik.
Don't eat Cevapcici with fries all day. Look for small fish restaurants with today's catch. Isands Krk, Pag or Rab are not so cool imo. Only more expensive and time consuming ferries.
If you can, go by car or motorcycle and drive the coast road. Terrific views... I recommend camping, Croatia has the best campsites in South Europe. Clean, cheap and free from all the family business like in Italy. Take a camping hammock, they have pine trees everywhere to hang it :-)
I'll be there again from June, 23rd until July, 8th touring from Germany to Montenegro an back :-)

We went a few years ago. Did Dubrovnik and Split.
Dubrovnik is cool if you are into Game of Thrones you can go spotting all the locations. We stayed in a lovely little apartment at the tiny West Harbour - it's a beautiful little quiet harbour that the locals and lovers sit out at night and chill at - its also a GoT location.
Dubrovnik is a cruise stop off city so be prepared for big groups of granny tourists. We hired a car and went to Split for a few days. Split is a different vibe, a much younger cooler vibe. Beautiful old walled town to walk around. Lots of expensive restaurants at the seafront with all the nice yachts and boats in the harbour. Visit Restaurant/Tavern Fife (google it) it's where the locals go for beers and quality no frill seafood - the deep fried baby squid is killer!
Then we headed back to Dubrovnik for a few days chillout at a resort hotel where everything was included. We didnt have to worry about preparing or going out for meals which was really chill and not the type of holiday we normally do.
In the past week I've seen a lot of friend post on social that they are going/there/been to dubrovnik which is strange.
Split and the islands seem to be a pretty popular place to go for the partying young kids. Island hopping on party boats seems to be the thing to do.
