Others here will probably know more about this than me, but I went fairly early in the summer season and found that things along the coast hadn't quite kicked into gear (water taxis, boat trips, hire places, nightlife etc).
If you're going in spring then heading inland while the temperature is barable and the hills are green might be a good idea. I think lots of people spend the winter in zagreb and come back to the coast for summer. I heard there was lots going on in Zagreb up until it gets hot.
Either way, definitely go to some of the islands, either on your own hired boat or an excursion. Krka waterfalls as mentioned in the other thread are beautiful. Trogir's a great place for dinner. Split's good for bars/clubs.
It's impossible to fuck it up though, really. Great place.
