what do you say to a client that sends you all the logos of the institutions that sponsor a cultural event inside a word document?

this is not the first time this happens to me, but in this case client as a formation as a graphic designer.

    am i missing something?
is this actually a way to send files?

    • the quality is okay but I have to select, save, name, decide which size and format on every logo.oey_oey
    • this is a trend right?oey_oey
    • You can attempt to extract the logos and drive yourself nuts (don't do this)... you can attempt to explain to the client why the DOC is unacceptable...PonyBoy
    • ... (I usually don't choose this option either as I just usually get dead air on the other end of the phone or a 'huh?' face in person)...PonyBoy
    • ... that being said I'd advise you go find the logos on the web yourself (most stuff is out there if you search for pdfs etc)... takes a couple extra hours...PonyBoy
    • ... rather than waiting days hoping your client can provide what you needPonyBoy
    • your second comment...exactly what happens to me, every time.oey_oey
    • and you know what, it's always people that work doing also office work ads in a fucking office.oey_oey
    • everytime!!!oey_oey
    • I need a link where this is explained. can't find one.oey_oey
    • Pony is right. Go fund the logos yourself. I know I’m months late to this but it stands.monospaced

I feel so bad for my client. She's made so many bad decisions before we engaged that it's financially catching up to her.

Last week I put in some free time because I care. But, she still hasn't updated the copy on amazon. The current copy is so bad, like scatter brained bad with a mix of english-is-not-my-first-language... She's had the update for almost a week, I have to wonder, is she making another bad decision?

On my FB page I had a link, I just deleted it. I designed a new site, she can't put it up. So she has a bunk website, and crappy amazon profiles, but genuinely acceptable products. My next step is to sell them face-to-face at gourmet food shops... but with nothing other than me and an order sheet. I don't feel comfortable with any digital asset.

I have to tell her the truth, that's what she is paying me for anyways. Dang I feel bad.

    • Put a deck together with a timeline for all these outstanding tasks and manage her.. in two weeks she will have caught upSlashPeckham

    Not particularly interesting thing ahead:

Handed over a job to a new client today. Just met him yesterday after he turned up to the studio unannounced. Not a big fan of that. Nice enough guy, but he's not very good at explaining himself. Yesterday he wanted 'a thing' and showed me a representative piece of material, that was about 1mm thick. So, that's in mind. He asks for 1.5mm thick, so I have that too in mind. We end up going with a cheaper material that is 2mm thick.

Beyond mixing up dimensions in emails and not explaining how he wanted me to interpret his design, and with my sadly not being psychic, it took about three rounds yesterday to finally get around to what he wanted. All good, I deal with a lot of inexperienced clients, so it's a learning experience for us both.

Hand over the job today, and he's impressed, but surprised at how thin it is. It's cheap, thin material, as specified, so it warps when you bend it, as he bends it in hand. For the purposes he needs though, this is actually better, but whatever. He's visibly perturbed. "I thought it'd be thicker?". "It is thicker - it's 2mm, rather than the 1.5mm you originally specified". He realises that he's holding the two copies he asked for, so what he feels in hand is actually even thinner than what he expected. "I thought I asked for 2mm?". "Yes.. you did?".

Again, he's happy with how it's come out, and so we discuss ways of beefing it up for installation, but he's still perplexed.

He lifts up a thumb and describes a line with another finger at about its knuckle.

    "How big is this, 2mm?"

"umm.. no - that looks about 35mm".

Right. I getcha. He meant centimetres. All this time.

For what he needs, thinner is better, but damnit, how do you get to our sort of age and make that kind of a mistake? Repeatedly? Again, nice bloke, and it's all good, but jeez.

Oh, and to top it off - as I say, I don't much like random walk-ins to the studio here, but a friend called from outside to say this guy was outside looking for me (we have a large construction project in the building at the moment - everything's a mess) - not much more info than that. When I meet this guy, as far as I'm aware, he's a vague acquaintance of my friend, so treat him as such. The job is for a thing my friend is peripherally involved in and it's the sort of thing he'd recommend me for, so it made sense. It's only after I do the job and charge mates rates for it that I learn that it was just some weird coincidence and my friend had no clue who he was. flol. Aaanyway.

I did a tiny wee job for my immediate neighbours, who work on a lot of good stuff (very smart girls), yesterday.

They want me to charge 4x what I was intending to - it's not a lot of money, but for what I did, it's waaay too much.

"We're paying you for your brain, Nairn".
"You can have it on a platter - the fucker causes me way too many problems".

Not going to lie - the extra money will come in handy. I don't know what's happened, but the last week has been incredibly quiet, and I'm a mite concerned about the next weeks as I've only got one big-ish job lined up. The opposite of what I was expecting - I figured the positive vibes coming from vaccination rates would encourage hope and expenditure from clients, but.. huh. Not immediately apparent here.

    • Maybe word got out that you're charging 4x too muchnb

    A good client story...

One of my clients has me on what is essentially a retainer. It is a flat bi-weekly salary for me to work from home as I see fit. If works exceeds our mutual expectation, I simply charge more hours. I have had to do this once in the last seven months.

I manage two sites for them. One being built from the ground up only visible to our small team. Another being replaced by a site I am developing for them. I was hired for both before Covid-19, which has severely impacted their focus, yet I still get my check.

The best part of this story, is even while we sit and all do significantly less, occasionally I do get a request for something either front end or a mock up for later development. This all fits perfectly within our agreement. However, I then see an addition of hours to my check that I did not request. This has now happened numerous times.

Essentially, lately I kind of feel like I get paid for simply being employed by them, then they pay me additionally to do actual work.

Thank you very much, I can't wait to actually do some real development for your companies once things (hopefully) open back up.

    • forgot to add, paychecks are mailed. they show up sooner than i expect. i thought there was one next week, it showed up today w/ extra hours. hence the post.imbecile

Automotive aftermarket client is getting ready to develop apparel.

The agency shows me some comps. I respond with: has the client signed off on using the logo in place of the union on the American flag.

Their response: Yes! And who is going to stop it! The flag police? We are not in Portland!!!!!!

My response: You’re right, we’re not in Portland. But, we’re still in the United States:

    - The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

    - The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

    - The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

Their response: Ok. Then stay away from the flag idea.

We still haven't heard from the flag police stationed in Portland.

Client likes my style and hires me for what I do.

Client wants a map for an event that will be used as the background of the website (this event will happen online due pandemic) with no symbols like coffee cups or symbols that represent the event taking place and the different lectures.

The same design should be used in a flyer and in a book cover.

The proposal I did stylized map with abstract and minimal elements that represent water, ground, grass, ramps, stairs, roads, etc...
The colors I chose were magenta, pink, yellow, light blue and white over a dark blue.

Client replies asking for me to use more elements that have something to do with the event and the lectures instead of the ones I used.

I first say okay...but then I think will it still look like a map though it's an abstract map? That's not what you asked for and that's not what I've been working the last two weeks, the deadline is in 5 days.

Now it seems that client moved from initial idea to 9 illustrations that reflect the lectures and it doesn't matter that it does like a map.

Then other person in the clients department writes that bold sans serif typeface over dark blue looks like Nivea, specially if I use a white rectangle around the text then it's totally Nivea.

And since I used that setting for the Twitter feed part of the map this persons tells that Twitter has to be more creamy.

I forgot to mention that I use a a box with a white outline or dark blue depends of the backgrounds color around the name of the lecture.

To be honest that with the Nivea pissed me off a bit...

Okay, I have to sort it out now and I replaced the dark blue with purple but this fucks up all the color palette that the client initially agreed to.

Then one of the clients tells me that a white bold sans serif over dark blue is already used by Nivea so I have to come up with something different and maybe I don't realize of these rules because I'm too artsy.

They also said that they could accept part of the design for the website's background and flyer but I would need to come up with something more into the theme of the event for the book cover.

I didn't use Metro Typeface but Renner* and the shade of blue is lighter than Nivea.

Now I have 5 days to work it out...

I know I will but the last two days were very frustrating cause instead of working on some sort of constructive feedback related to what was asked I'm trying to keep most of the original design and keep my style and somehow find a way to meet the client's demands and that depressed me a bit.

Sorry, I just had to vent...didn't do client design work in a long time...and frustrated that one person who decides over the overall design has a awesome visual culture.

    Now back to work...

    • shit..that was pretty long, sorry guys...oey_oey

Clients reached a whole new level of stupid a few days ago.

Video guy in our team makes a video. Adds a soundtrack, and of course times every cut in the entire video to said soundtrack.

Client 1: Awesome! I love this song, it's XXX by the Killers.

Client 2: Ooh the Killers? that sounds a bit ominous! Maybe we shouldn't use a band with such a scary name! Can you please use another song? k thx

Not the lyrics of the song. Not the song name. The name of the fucking band, which isn't credited, so only those who know the song well will know.

"We have the ability to change and maintain effectiveness in a changing environment and embrace new ideas openly, willingly and timely."

I'm making a strategy video and this is one of five key messages.

Putting aside the general and generic shiteness of it all, I questioned whether or not this was correct use of 'timely'. It's supposedly been through the entire company but no-one has an issue with it.

    Am I going mad?
