I know of people who have been in England for years and can't speak a facking word of English.
That's just plain lazy arsed and ignorant.

This country is built on the backs of thousands and thousands immigrants who have come over here, worked their arses off to make a better life for themselves and can speak far better english than you or I can. You all right about these people coming over here, taking your benefits, not speaking a word of english and making you feel like immigrants in your own country, but without immigration the UK would have collapsed years ago with an aging workforce, no nhs, and no pot to piss in. I find the sweaping generalisation here appalling, ignorant and racist. And to be honest I expected better from some of you.

Why whould the UK collapse without the immigrants?
I have no issue with them coming here and making a better life for themselves. What I have an issue with is them not adjusting to our way of living. If I moved to their homeland I'd respect their rules and beliefs. I wouldn't demand they live by mine.
What gives them the right to say how bad and evil we are, and at the same time will accept all our benefits and free healthcare? On the news an English guy got arrested for disagreeing with them burning the union jack in the streets, wheres the justice in that?

This may lead to a situation in which the Queen (for the first time), may get solitary power, which would be rather interesting.
Immigration is an issue here that divides the government and the population.

Because we have an aging population and a serious workforce shortage.
You do also realise that the majority of the NHS is staffed by immigrants don't you? If everyone fucked off 'where they belong' the NHS would cease working.
My main problem here is your "them" attitude. Who is this "them" you talk of? Who are these people you talk about questioning your beliefs and traditions and not learning your language? Who is saying you are evil?
Your sweaping statements are based on stereotypes, bollocks and very little fact. With each comment you ignore the millions of people who live here and make me proud to be called British. You have no proof of this mythical 'them', only a fear of the unkown and an incredible amount of ignorance.
You are really sounding like a cross between the Daily Mail and a BNP leaflet.

this same notion that migrant communities aren't pulling their cultural or socio-political weight is hugely prevalent in the states right now, too.
what turns the whole thing into a very dangerous tinderbox in this country is the religious suspicion and intolerance.
if mexicans practiced islam, america would be an even more volatile society.
to be honest, that's the freakiest thing about living here. i'm sure at some level it's racism as well, but most of the isolationist patter is religious bigotry. scary.

only just skim read this thread but so far I agree with Soda's last comment.
Also did anyone see newsnight's report last night about how much tax is spent on translation services for people that don't speak english (it's millions) There was a human rights lawyer making the case for there being no translation as it de-incentivises people coming to the UK to learn english. I'm inclined to agree. They showed parts of the brick lane community who have lived in london for over 20 years and still have zero english.
Of course this doesn't affect understanding eachother's cultures. We should obviously make the effort to understand new cultures and vice versa, that's what make the UK special.

I'd say they should pay for translations. There might be a grace period, ie. 1-2 years, but from then.. Free English classes are being offered everywhere around UK, ffs!

I'm not sure I'm following, UU (my poor English) - why translations shoule be paid for by interested parties? Because people should pay their bills, rather than dumping them on taxpayers?
I am an immigrant and my view is, my new country doesn't owe me anything, I have been granted a privilege. If I don't learn the language, it is my fault that I don't understand what they say to me in the tax office. It's nice to have leaflets and forms in my own language, but it shouldn't lead to absurdities like Spanish being an official language in California.

LOL. She musta been a slappa or summat.
