i ride brakeless in the city, and i'm not remotely any sort of unwashed tough guy. it's hard to describe the experience, it's just something you have to try! rider and bicycle are one and you have so much more control. oh, plus it gives you legs of fucking kryptonite. after traning a season on a fixed, jump on a geared bike and you will be leaving everyone in your dust.

hahaha.
When I worked for Waterford my big boss was Richard Schwinn, we used to have a race through the small town where the factory was and the Schwinn Museum would come through once a year. We got to ride all these crazy ass old vintage bikes. That high wheel is no punk.

go fixed, conversion if you like, but you should eventually get a real track bike. i have got an IRO frame and couldn't be happier.
it's a lot of fun, you'll never switch back.

you'll never switch back.
until your knees blow out.
- acescence0
i think the knee thing is a myth. i've had bad knees all my life from competitive skiing, and riding fixed has actually strengthened them and lessened my pain. just my opinion, of course.
- skelly0
ditto on knees feeling better riding fixed. they hurt like hell for 2 weeks because you use muscles you never worked out before, but after that, you feel like a machine.
the problem with freewheels/coasting is you pump out energetic bursts of pedalling then coast until you slow down and repeat, fixed is a more consistent cadence. and running a break lessens the stress on the knees if that ends up being a problem.

it fucks up your knees.

Enter response:Redline makes some nice bikes at decent prices. I rode a Monocog around all last winter (fixed) I'd recommend the brand so far.

went single speed after some run-ins with large moving metal objects
feeler a bit more in control now on the little hills here, even tho i never felt out of control per say before - just a bit safer i guess
