We have just adopted this guy. A rescue centre found him abandoned. He's called Tyre, I think I may have to change it as the Spanish think he's called Tía, which is auntie.

i buried a 'possum friend this morning. he was called Dennis, after mantrakid's light crab. found him passed of natural causes next to my workshop, where once I pulled a glue trap off of him. he barely knew I existed but I fed, watered, and watched him on camera every night for two years, and worried on nights he didn't show. I made him a little wooden house in the garden he stayed in sometimes.

    gonna miss you, fucker.

What a great day this has been. Seeing my dad out and about has been completely surreal, just like I remember as a kid. :)

I came just in time to sit on a meeting with my dad and some gallery owners in the city. It's been 15 days since he got out and he has already received offers for exclusive gallery rights. This particular gallery we visited was an area called Santa Fe in Mexico City, it's pretty much the most expensive section of the city. It's a massive penthouse/apartment that has been converted into a gallery showing artists from Mexico by appointment only. They paid him for a painting they sold last week and gifted him a sick coffee table book. They want to have a very large solo expo within a couple months. This is HUGE. It's wonderful to see the fruits of his work of the last 30 years.

Posting some pics of the space we visited.

getting info on one of the pieces staying at the gallery.

this is actually a double sided painting. this one was done using his hands.

a bedroom in the back is converted to a studio for artists to work. that's all plastic on the floor. they asked him if he would be interested in working there and he said no.

this artists made this kitty with smoke. loved it!

all the paintings leaning on the ground are my dads

even the kitchen is filled with tons of pieces.

Today we have an interview with Proceso and another with a French press later.

    • wow. seems it is going extremely well. congratulations !d_gitale

    @microkorg

I did one like this through the summer - admittedly had a bit of help from a friend who's a builder, but it's not too too hard. Coming next will be a deck and a storage shed that sits to the left of the cabin (will be the same style) and will kind of seclude an area where our patio furniture will go. I went wit the post holes mostly for cost, but also because we have a bit of slope in that part of our back yard to contend with, and the deck will be tiered down from there.

Nevermind my wife's derelict bike I've been telling her to bring in for ages.

I've yet to put a small awning up over the door, with lighting I designed, and since these photos were taken, the door's been painted black.

All of the cladding is Yakisugi, including the roof - we designed floating roof so we didn't have to do shingles or corrugate.

We've put more art up in here since these pics... once it's final.FINAL I'll post some more.

I don't know what building regs are like in the UK but here you can build something like this without permit as long as it's under 108sqft and doesn't impede on a few other rules regarding property lines and occupancy ratios.

    No half pipe, unfortunately.

    • That’s cool. Did you use plans from somewhere?calculator
    • Simon, it’s reasonably secure, but we live downtown in a city so there’s always a risk of anything.ben_
    • Gucci, we’re in Hamilton, but mostly the same rules apply. It heats nicely with a small space heater and cools okay with a fan.ben_
    • We have a rough in for a split unit though. Just waiting to see if we really want one.ben_
    • Phan, no I designed it all. The only stuff that took some thinking was the roof and the angled front (which is hard to tell from these pics).ben_
    • I took drafting in high school, and my friend is familiar with current code so it was a pretty easy design/build.ben_
    • /\ sorry that was for calculator.
Phan, it’s Yakisugi or Shou Sugi Ban. Charred cedar, coated with oil.
      ben_
    • Lovely! I didn't know 'Yakisugi' as a term and thought it was an American technique. A friend built a wodnerful solid table using it. Fucker to seal after tho!Nairn

    • What do you mean by, floating roof?Gnash
    • Boiled Linseed for the wood?Gnash
    • @Gnash, yeah boiled linseed oil. much of it.ben_
    • @gnash, there's a waterproof roof under the roof you see with about 4" of space between. Both the cedar roofing and the sub-roof feed into a hidden eaves thatben_
    • runs water to a drain. The cedar roofing is super waterproof, but in the event it ever sprung a leak, the sub roof catches the water and deals with it.ben_
    • A lot of people burn one side of the wood which isn't the way to do it. It's laborious but you have to do all edges and both sides to get the anti-rot benefits.ben_
    • The BLO seals and protects as well, with any luck this siding should outlast our time in this house by 30 years.ben_
    • Interesting. I imagine the gap between the roof membranes offers some heating/cooling benefitsGnash
    • Dang dude, you made that?! You're hired. My backyard has been waiting for one of these for years now.nocomply
    • @gnash, yeah it may... since there's technically two ridge vents there's some flow in there for sure. I've been checking for ice build up but so far nothing!ben_
    • Nocomply - I'm not sure I could have done it on my own. The guidance from my friend and his help was crucial. I'm good to do the other one and the deck now tho.ben_
    • I'm happy to help though. If you understand your building codes and permit sitch wherever you live it's a fairly easy thing to get going.ben_

I've been working out of my studio here in Knoxville for the last 5+ years and a smaller one on the same block for the few years prior to that. I've just paid the last rent here and have sold our house and am packing up the fam to move back to NZ.

It feels kind of bittersweet... I love it here, but also excited to change things up a bit. Business has grown and is steady enough that I don't need to be here anymore.

I shared here a while back about my girlfriend, who I loved dearly, having to leave the country and me choosing not to go with her. I don't remember exactly what I wrote but the jist of it was that I was worried about my sociopathy levels as I felt absolutely zero emotion toward it, while she cried every single day for the month leading up to it. I think I did suggest that it'd probably hit me once she'd actually gone and it had sunk in.

Well, it did. It's been 5 months now and I still cry like a baby every single day. I have to hide in the toilet at work like an idiot. We spent every day together for years and she was really the only person in the world that I truly felt close with. We still talk but my lack of emotion leading up to it made her think that I didn't really care about her and she was able to move on and get on with her life much better than I.

I've had this sadness once before in my life, that I remember, but that time I hid from it with alcohol and dating new people, keeping myself busy and eventually finding someone to replace that hole. This time I've chosen not to hide from it, and indeed to face it head on, and I've learnt a hell of a lot about myself. I've spent so much time alone with my emotions, like I never have done before, and I've learnt that the pain and sadness stems from not really loving or accepting myself. It stems, actually, from being beaten and then left by my father, and as a small child, rationalising that behaviour the only way I could, that this person that I loved is attacking me and then left, so clearly I must not be good enough. I've also learnt how to open up and not bottle up my emotions like I have done my entire life. It's brought me closer with the people in my life.

It's been one hell of a year so far for me. I'm freer, kinder, more accepting and less judgemental, far more open, and I feel more excited about the future and about life further down the line than ever before, but at the same time I have a constant fluttering feeling in my belly , the feeling of loss and emptiness, and I cry like a child multiple times a day, every day, for months now. As a grown man that is, I think, even tougher, as I can't really do that in front of people.

In the spirit of openness, I thought I'd share, and I think it helps me simply writing it down.

Cherish those you love, and don't take them for granted.

    • Anyone that knows me or has met me would say I'm confident and they would probably say I'm arrogant, and I guess I always have been...set

Ok I'm leaving QBN. I was never given a chance. From the start people here accused me of being some other users.

Since I posted some videos by PJW that I found interesting and agreed with I'm just getting downvotes. God forbid you post some different views/ opinions even if left-leaning (which I am). Seems some people are really so deep in their comfort zone and echo-chamber they can't accept any other views on certain topics. Or at least discuss in a constructive manner without calling names.

It's a waste of time to argue and I don't want to stir more shit up here.

Sooner than expected, but as expected, my role was eliminated yesterday afternoon. No more than an hour after my boss pushed me to deliver a mockup for one of their brand websites that they're paying an external agency to develop. You're welcome.

As expected, the engineering manager thinks his team of 4 backend app developers can design and UX the remaining 60% of the app. Even with the component library I built, there's not a snowballs chance in hell.

So I sit here this early am questioning the universe and my place in it's vastness. I feel like a total failure and I'm not sure I want to design again. Fuck me. I'm having a hard time looking my eldest son in the eye for fear that he sees the failure in mine.
