    serious moment here...

... my momma's sick. I know many of you have been here... she's not well and I'm scared shitless. Please (if applicable)... get the fuck over yourselves and worship the ground your parents walk on and make sure they see you do it. <3

    • My parents are still in a relative good shape, except for minor ailments, 78 and 76yo...

My Grandfather is in hospital with Covid 19, he's 98.

It's been a rollercoaster of a ride for the last 10days. Confusion, panic and despair have all reared their ugly heads since we called the ambulance last week.

He's been put on IV drips of antibiotics and the appropriate drugs and steroids and is improving daily. The doctors are saying that he will make a full, but slow recovery and is likely to be allowed back to his home next week.

It's an odd illness, he has been tested for Covid four times and not once has it been positive. Turns out, you can only test positive for a limited number of days during the incubation period. The only certain way of establishing that it is Covid is the appearance of chest x-rays once you are in the grips of the disease.

As he was vulnerable, we kept him completely isolated from unnecessary human interactions and always wore masks when we visited to deliver shopping. We cannot fathom when or where he picked it up. He had few visitors and they were always masked. We are rapidly coming to the conclusion that he picked it up from a delivery he had.

All things considered it's looking very positive for him. We're lucky, the doctors and nurses and NHS in general have been outstanding and it's not cost us one penny.

Take the best care of your crew and look after yourselves people, this is some serious shit.

    • Wow 98, he is one tough cookie. I hope that he pulls through!utopian

Couple of weeks ago my wife notices some irregularities in one of her breasts. Not a lump, but some other hings not quite right. She goes to the doctor who says "this is all very odd" and sends her off for a scan.

She gets the results of the initial scan and heads back to the doctor who this time says "sorry to break this to you...but these scans are not good. I need to send you off for more tests and a biopsy...if they offer you cancer counselling, I'd suggest you take it. This type of irregularity can often be a sign of extremely aggressive cancer".

So the next few days waiting to get the tests done were pretty sombre. Lots of crying and just a giant pall over our lives.

Friday we go to the specialist surgeon...she looks over the original scan and doesn't look as worried...but she was still quite concerned.

Had the tests done later that morning...an ultrasound, an MRI, another unscheduled ultrasound, 3D mammogram, biopsy...all pretty full on and very emotionally draining for her.

Then was told it would be a week before we'd get the results. Horrid weekend...just rank her contemplating death and me thinking all sorts of terrible outcomes.

Then out of the blue we get the results today. All clear!

I have to say, the sense of relief was just overwhelming. I haven't seen my wife yet since she got the news...I think we'll be due a little celebration tonight!

I know many don't have happy "cancer stories"...so my thoughts are with all those doing it tough.

    • glad things came up clear, man... I will now go hug my wife and call my mother <3PonyBoy

We got a call on Thanksgiving morning that my father in law, who had been in the hospital with some serious stuff, had blood clots on his brain. The doctor says it could be any day. So my wife and kids fly from JFK the next day to see him in Japan, and I fly from LA on Monday night after finishing a business trip.
We get there and he's in the ICU and as my wife is visiting him one day, he says that he really wants us to take the newly opened train ride from their home station, down into the Shinjuku section of Tokyo. It just opened Nov 30th and he was excited for us to ride it. So the next morning, we take the 40 minute train ride and when we get there, my wife gets a call from her sister to come to the hospital immediately. The next hour was the longest hour of my life. We jump into a cab and are crawling out of Tokyo with my wife and kids in the back seat, and me crammed up in the front seat. My wife is sobbing, as am I thinking that her father had passed away. All this man wanted us to do was ride the new train line. We finally made it to the hospital, relieved that he was still alive.

Two days later, he says that the sweet potatoes in his garden need to be pulled out of the ground. So the next day my kids grab his gardening tools out of his shed and proceed to dig up some small sweets and I film it with the plan of showing him a video back at the hospital. Now I've made a lot of videos in my life, it's what I do for a living. But never have I been so affected as when I showed my father in law a video of his grandkids digging up his potatoes. His eyes lit up as I opened my laptop and leaned over his hospital bed and hit play. The video was nothing special, but to him it was everything. Shit..I'm tearing up writing this now. He's still hanging in there and we're back home hoping for some kind of recovery.

I like my father in law a lot. I truly adore the man.

    • I'm not crying ...monospaced

    Yeah! it's negotiation time!

That big agency I just finished 5 interviews with emailed me back asking if had time tomorrow to chat and that they had exciting news to share. Today was undoubtedly going to be a stress all of a day, but now I have something really awesome to look forward to no matter how the election pans out.

Now comes the hardest part of all -- not undervaluing myself as I negotiate. And also, hoping they don't undervalue me and come with an offer a decent first offer. My friend just hired for a similar position at another office at the agency, so I have an idea of where I should be on the scale.

My wife had an interesting incident yesterday at the school she teaches at. Lunchtime arrives and the kids all head out to the playground. About 10 minutes in, a kid in her class, about 7 years old, runs in and tells her that a little girl in prep (that's a 5-6 year old) was causing a bit of commotion and hitting other kids with a stick.

So my wife goes out to investigate...only to find the little girl running around the yard with a giant pink dildo that she'd brought in from home!

One of the other teachers had to call the mother and get her to come and collect said implement. I can only imagine the scene when she picked it up from the front office!

"Oh hi...I'm Mary's mother...here to pick up my dildo thanks".

Considered not sharing this, but figured I had put so much effort in I may as well.

It all started two weeks ago when I read the news that Imgur was going remove all anon and NSFW images (https://qbn.com/reply/4090042...

There was a comment from PhanLo that really struck home for me: "This is absolute bumsauce! Will make QBN a graveyard of broken links. Who will take the image sharing crown?"

At first I thought, that's sad. Then I thought, I've been wanting to build something like this for over a decade. So I did.

    I present to you: https://haasie.com

Inspired by QBN. An after hours project. Still rough around the edges, but it does what it says on the tin. It was built specifically to prevent link rot on Imgur links.

I will be adding more features in the future but for now:

    1. Upload the Imgur links you want to backup.
    2. Wait a while - it can take some time depending on how busy the service is.
    3. Swap out "imgur" in the links with "haasie" in the database. (ie.

    becomes
). Now when the file is deleted on Imgur, it will not disappear from QBN.

I can help with scripting on the DB if needed.

    • Forgot the links would not be text. Should be: https://i.imgur.com/… becomes https://i.haasie.com….skinny_puppy
    • The QBN link is: https://qbn.com/repl…skinny_puppy
    • wow!!!!oey_oey
    • but that would mean I know the imgur links of what I posted in the first place no?oey_oey
    • Yeah, that is a catch. I was thinking more along the line of dumping all the imgur links out of the database (of say QBN) and uploading those.skinny_puppy
    • And then find/replacing them in the database with haasie links.
If you have a suggestion of how it would work better for you, happy to look at making that work.
      skinny_puppy

    • Could look at building something that could upload a user's account to Haasie.skinny_puppy
    • On DigitalOcean. Porn is fine as long as it is nothing illegal (ie. kiddies, revenge). Same rules as Imgur. Hoping Imgur acts as a filter for now.skinny_puppy

    Feel good story time.

I live in a private neighborhood. You either live here or are visiting the area, as there is no through traffic. The only business is a nursing home in the very back of the development where it's always quiet. Being so, you occasionally see a few older people out for a walk using walkers. Another has a rascal and has stopped by to discuss my vehicles on occasion when I've been outside.

Yesterday, I was getting a new dryer, so I asked my most supplied neighbor if I could borrow his dolly to make moving the old and new units around a bit easier. Fast forward to completing the wiring in my garage with a friend that afternoon and I walk across the street to return said dolly.

Upon return, an older gentleman has appeared in the street in front of my house resting on his walker seat. I ask him if everything is all right and he responds "Yes, just needed to take a break. A wheel has come off my walker." What!? I say as I sit on the curb and yep, this guy is doing three wheel motion with a bunch of smashed bearing pieces floating on an open axle.

He tells me he has the wheel and pulls it from his walker seat. Aside from an unneeded race from the destroyed bearing still inserted in the wheel, it looks like a skateboard bearing will fit perfectly on each side.

I ask him to head into the garage as I go inside to grab a set of bearings. A flathead screwdriver and a hemmer later, the old race is out and two JuJu bearings seat right in. I take the nut off, pull the out smashed pieces of the old bearing and it glides right on. I tighten the nut to tension, so the wheel doesn't shake and it rolls smooth as butter.

Elated, and visibly moved, he introduces himself as Kendall asking what he owes me, before telling me the local medical supply store was going to charge $150 for the repair. I introduce myself in return stating there is no need for compensation.

He then asked if the red car in the back of my garage is mine. I tell him yes, it's a 1957 Thunderbird. He says it's beautiful and remembers them from being a kid before telling me he was born in 1948.

He thanks me again for everything and I tell him if any of the other three wheels give him a problem to come back. Then he rolls down my driveway to continue on his walk.

    Best day in a while.

    • Helping others is the best of all feelings. It's touching to see how alone and helpless certain elders are...OBBTKN

I'm trying to be sober, as lockdown has made me more aware of just how destructive my drink and drug use has been. So far my record since April has been 3 weeks, but this weekend I had the worst slip up getting so wasted I couldn't meet the woman I'm seeing at the moment and I today I've got cold sweats. Usually it's just a beer or maybe a joint, but when it comes to class-A's that's where things get bad.

Just saying as I feel opening up about this to people (who don't really know me!!) makes a difference. I'm trying to own this shit and trying to understand what's so good about it? How do i feel drunk or high? Where does it take me?

Last Tuesday I went on a hiking trip with my 13 years old son that was supposed to be a 2 nights camping, covering the distance of 22 miles in Adirondack (West Canada Lake Wilderness) It was our first time in that area. We traveled 11 miles the first day, stayed 2 nights at a beautiful lake, then planned to walk another 11 miles through a different route back to the car.

That's where I learned the hard lesson of relying on technology.

The app Alltrails was used to guide me. It did a pretty good job, even sending me notifications as soon as I am off the path. But the app also drains the battery fast. My phone died the second day. I had a small battery charger, so I thought it would be enough to get us back the next day. However, it ran out of juice half way.
Then I thought it's not a problem, we will just follow the trail marks and eventually get back.

    and ...

we missed a turn that resulted in 15 extra miles and 1 extra night and a day in the wilderness.

Since we had to carry everything ourselves, we took enough food just to get us through 2 nights. So we were out of food too.

The red line on this map is our original path, the orange line is the detour.

When we got to the lake (the end of the orange line) that's where I realized we are completely lost. We turned back, but it was too dark at that point, so we decided to spend the night right there and continue our search in the morning.

Meanwhile, my wife freaked out that we haven't returned as promised. She got contacted the rangers, who started a full-blown search for us in the morning.

Luckily, overnight the charger miraculously got a little juice. It was enough for my phone to receive 1%. I was able to launch AllTrails app for a few seconds, locate us on the map and see where we missed the turn.

A few hours later, we bumped in to the rangers, who escorted us to the car and notified my wife that we were ok.

When I got home, I ordered a real map and a compass. I will never travel without that in my backpack.
