Fucking pricks those customs mob!

I ordered 3 1GB sticks of Ram for my Mac (2 for me, 1 for a mate) from Crucial, and it was all hunky dory. Cheap, and delivered last week with no hassles. Got home from work today to find a letter asking me to pay my money owing to Customs. AU$111.32!!!!!

3 Fucking sticks of RAM. Totalling US$357 + shipping, and customs hits me for au$111.That's just fucking ridiculous.

(of the $111.37. $49.22 was for GST. $52.20 was for "other charges" - it doesn't care to indulge me what "other charges" actually are, and $9.90 on a disbursement fee. fuckers!)

We been looking into LightCMS as a means of powering smaller sites that we have developed. All well and good, except for some real pain in the arse restrictions in terms of no PHP, and no way of making your own forms out of their quite limited form builder.

So I've been hunting for alternatives, and can't find a practical alternative. Hosting isn't an issue. It seems the majority of CMS' are geared towards blogging, and lack something as simple multiple editable regions on a single page, and multiple levels of navigation. I just want to have 5 or so main sections, and then each section has a number of pages. Does anyone know a good CMS that allows that, and has a half-decent interface that we wouldn't be scared letting our clients loose in?

I did a bit back in Uni days, but now I'm getting back into it, but am very very rusty.

Call me shallow, but I had a look through what Borders had, and just about everything they looked tacky as.

So now you all know why I started that thread on happiness! :P

Just wanted to run one idea past you guys. There's other concepts, but this one specifically I want to see how it floats with people.

Basically, from the other thread, it's obvious that everyone has different things that make them happy, so it's pointless to generalise one thing on the poster. So instead, I leave an open space for people to come along and write on the poster themselves. So really, it has to encourage people to do that whilst it's stuck on a public wall.
Which one do you think achieves that the best, or what could reinforce that more?

(oh, and the yellow is actually pantone 803 U flourescant)

I've been hosting my site on .Mac for a while now, but now want to add a movable type photo blog, for which I need php. so I need a new host.

can anyone offer any cheap and reliable suggestions? I'd preferably like a handful of subdomains, and the possibility of hosting 2 or 3 compltely different sites (with different domain names).

I'm not too knowledgable about this, and confused a bit about pointing my domain name to a host properly (it's currently set as a redirector to a site on my iDisk), so some help there is also welcome.

What's Spymac hosting like? http://www.spymac.com/hosting/ would that be suitable for what I want (the cheapest option)? Although the crappy design of the site lowers my confidence meter in them...

It's been a while since I last put up some new work on my folio site, and figured that now, when I'm planning on putting some up, would be a good time for a bit of tweaking.

I'm still very happy with my site. It fits perfectly with the rest of my personal ID system, it's quintessential /me/, is a extremely easy to navigate, fast loading with nice big shots of work, and works for both corporate and more daring clients.

But is there anything anyone would suggest tweaking? Is there anything that bugs you in the slightest? Is the nav for seeing more shots straight forward enough?

oh, and is there a damn way to get that iframe (the whole plain grey area) to centre properly in firefox/mozilla? Safari listens, but firefox just seems to have its fingers in its ears)

Does anybody know how to do a duotone image - that's mostly plain greyscale, with an area with spot colour?

Basically in this image, the whole think is b+w greyscale, except his shirt, which I want black and yellow. Pantone 129U. This will be printed 2 colour. (the image will be placed into Freehand, with some type overlaid in there)

Grids - Convincing clients Jan 29, 08, 8:24 p.m.

OK, we all know the advantages of using grids for layouts, be it in print or online, but how do you all convince clients and or bosses the value of sticking to them?

It infuriates me constantly when I go to all the effort of setting up a good, flexible grid, and make sure I stick to it through everything, only to get a request for "can you move that one element over just a little bit. I don't care about the grid, do it anyway!". I need a good clear comeback, that an idiot would understand, about why that's bad idea.

client wants one of those flash based magazines, with the page turning stuff, that is automatically generated from an uploaded pdf.

They're adamant that they've seen it done, but I'm racking my brain to work out how to do it.

A position has opened up at a top firm here, and I need to email off an application with some samples of work in the next few days. I'd really like to work here, so I want to make sure the samples I send them are tops.

I think 3 or 4 pieces are probably best at this stage, since I'll refer them to my website in the cover letter anyway.All my work is either on my website, or on this crappy temp page I threw together of work I haven't put up properly yet

The firm does fairly traditional design work (although of a very high standard, one of the best in the country) - focussing a lot on the wine industry, and corporate. Web isn't really a factor. As such, the Block Estate wine label is definately getting sent, it's just a matter of what else.
