Customised Pencils Jun 28, 11, 6:16 a.m.
Do and QBNers have any recommendations of who can do *decent* customised pencils, and allow small runs? Want to stick a logo on 50-100 or so.
By decent, I mean better than the glorified golf pencil rubbish that all the sites google churns up sell, with those crappy gold ringed erasers on the end, and a downright horrible to write with. If they're shit to write with, then what's the point.
Google Maps API Feb 19, 09, 6:21 a.m.
Any Google Maps ninjas here?
I've been rocking though the tutorials here http://econym.org.uk/gmap/ to build a basic map for a friend. She's moving to London, and my gf has done up a list of places to check out.
The stumbling block for me though is the sidebar. I can get a list of markers in the sidebar, but what if I want to break that down into multiple lists? ie.
BARS

SHOPS

And body know how to achieve something like that?
It strikes me as something relatively obvious, and yet can't find anything online to explain how one might go about it.

Those British newspapers just couldn't let a good thing be and just ruin it for everyone. Bunch of wankers.
iPhone / Wacom interference Sep 28, 08, 4:12 a.m.
Just noticed that interference from my iPhone when there's an incoming call, makes my Wacom tablet go mental. Watch the cursor dance around the screen randomly clicking on stuff.
Granted my iPhone dock is right next to the tablet...
Real Estate Agents Sep 24, 08, 9:06 p.m.
Is it humanely possible for them to not be arse holes?
Face Your Manga Aug 25, 08, 5:38 a.m.
Is anybody else already fucking sick of seeing those stupid "manga" avatars everywhere, or is it just me?
Brand - Plus / Extra / Growth Aug 12, 08, 11:19 p.m.
Does anyone know of some good identities/logos where the brand has expanded on themselves. ie. to indicate large expansion of the company, or to moving into new markets, they tack on a plus or similar indicator to the name and logo?
I'm looking for interesting ways to convey that kind of company extension.
Online Style Guide - Wiki or CMS? Jul 30, 08, 11:54 p.m.
Has anyone developed an online branding style guide for their clients? If so, what did you use to run it - a CMS or Wiki software, or something else entirely?
Custom AJAX Map Jul 27, 08, 8:51 p.m.
Does anyone know of any frameworks or tutorials on how to build a custom interactive AJAX-y map?
Everything I've found is some kind of link with Google or Yahoo Maps, which isn't what I want.
I guess say you wanted to do a map of a shopping centre for example, with all the stores. And have things like tooltips for each store, clicking on a text link to take you to a specific point on the map, switches to turn on and off icons for amenities. That kind of thing.
Cheers
Practical CMS May 12, 08, 8:42 p.m.
We been looking into LightCMS as a means of powering smaller sites that we have developed. All well and good, except for some real pain in the arse restrictions in terms of no PHP, and no way of making your own forms out of their quite limited form builder.
So I've been hunting for alternatives, and can't find a practical alternative. Hosting isn't an issue. It seems the majority of CMS' are geared towards blogging, and lack something as simple multiple editable regions on a single page, and multiple levels of navigation. I just want to have 5 or so main sections, and then each section has a number of pages. Does anyone know a good CMS that allows that, and has a half-decent interface that we wouldn't be scared letting our clients loose in?

Is it just me, or is this just massively organised free pitching?
Grids - Convincing clients Jan 29, 08, 8:24 p.m.
OK, we all know the advantages of using grids for layouts, be it in print or online, but how do you all convince clients and or bosses the value of sticking to them?
It infuriates me constantly when I go to all the effort of setting up a good, flexible grid, and make sure I stick to it through everything, only to get a request for "can you move that one element over just a little bit. I don't care about the grid, do it anyway!". I need a good clear comeback, that an idiot would understand, about why that's bad idea.
Photography guides Jan 11, 08, 11:49 p.m.
Any recommendations on some good books and/or sites for (re-) learning photography?
I did a bit back in Uni days, but now I'm getting back into it, but am very very rusty.
Call me shallow, but I had a look through what Borders had, and just about everything they looked tacky as.
Screen Print on Jewel Case Apr 11, 07, 5:10 p.m.
Does anyone have any tips on screen printing onto a cd jewel case?
I want to print some white (1 colour) type onto the front of a case. Is it something any decent screen printer can do, or am I going to have to find my own solution?
Backup software for Win? Feb 27, 07, 5:10 p.m.
As I'm the most technologically literate person in this studio, I sometimes get thrown the (very much unwanted) temporarily title of tech support. So when my bosses parents company wants a backup drive, I have to go set it up for them.
Of course the software it comes with doesn't freaking work properly. And I'm sick and tired of going around in circles with Maxtor phone support.
Can anyone recommend a decent freeware (or cheap) piece of Windows backup software that just lets you pick a bunch of folders, and schedule them to backup to a network drive? Doesn't need to do any more that that.
Or even a Windows equiv. for SuperDuper on OS X
Thankyou in advance.
PDF > SWF Aug 31, 06, 8:01 p.m.
An odd request.
Does anyone know of a way of having an swf load in pages of a referenced pdf?
client wants one of those flash based magazines, with the page turning stuff, that is automatically generated from an uploaded pdf.
They're adamant that they've seen it done, but I'm racking my brain to work out how to do it.
CSS Layout help. please? :) Oct 26, 05, 11:38 p.m.
who here is a hotshot at css?
I've got a problem with this site:
http://www.bravenewmedia.com.au/…
i want the white background to automatically sit the length of the page.
I've tried to go about it by setting each element in as absolute positioned divs, nested within a parent div - which has a white background colour. However, the nested div's don't push the height of the parent div down to the bottom of the page.
At the moment I've added an extra div for the background, with a set height, just so you can at least see some of the page as it should be.
Ideally I'd like the white to go down to the bottom of the page, with a margin at the bottom of 25px (so you get the grey border like at the top). Even better would be the grey border to always sit at the bottom of the browser window and the content scroll behind it - but that's probably a pipe dream.
Surely there's a way to pull this off....

Help pick best work Jul 18, 05, 9:09 a.m.
Small favour to ask guys.
A position has opened up at a top firm here, and I need to email off an application with some samples of work in the next few days. I'd really like to work here, so I want to make sure the samples I send them are tops.
I think 3 or 4 pieces are probably best at this stage, since I'll refer them to my website in the cover letter anyway. All my work is either on my website, or on this crappy temp page I threw together of work I haven't put up properly yet

The firm does fairly traditional design work (although of a very high standard, one of the best in the country) - focussing a lot on the wine industry, and corporate. Web isn't really a factor. As such, the Block Estate wine label is definately getting sent, it's just a matter of what else.
their website: http://ikdesign.com.au/
So any suggestions on which pieces will be most appreciated.
cheers,
Nathan
(and hello to those Neue.DR folks who've already seen this ;P )
Skip flash preload? Jul 4, 05, 5:04 p.m.
Quick question.
A client of mine has just started whining that a flash banner I did (that sits at the top of every page on their site), flashes 100% before starting.
Obviously this is right for the first time it loads, as it's just the pre-loader. They just don't like when they view subsequent pages. Is there anyway to skip the preloader once the animation is in the browser's cache, or just stop it from flashing a 100% before starting the animation?

Retro Wallpaper Jun 22, 05, 9:53 a.m.
In relation to my other post about op-shops, I'm after some good vintage, 70s style wallpaper (actual wallpaper, not computer desktop). Something along these lines, but perhaps not so much with the light colours in it: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_…
I figured the best way to represent the style of clothes we want people to wear would be to use a wallpaper from that era for the whole poster rather than something lame like a photograph. Then I'll just grab the masking tape out and apply the text using just that (done a test run on plain paper and me likey. that's why I say not so much on the light colours on the paper, as the tape needs to contrast well against it).

*I will go hunting in actual stores during my lunch break tomorrow, but I like to hedge my bets ;)
