What I don't understand is the point of all of this conjecture. What is the motivation and eventual goal behind each of the factions in the debate.

Paul, who came for help, has a friend in need with whom we are all at least loosely affiliated. This seems like a logical place to come for help since we are a community however geographically diverse.

The QBN moderators are in a unique position that they can bring the issue to the forefront with an attempt to make a horrible situation better. I see this in the same way I see their support of the Patrick O'Brien foundation. Granted, the POBF is a broader foundation meant to help the greater good but would you argue against the foundation by saying that other people have AIDS? No, you would give if you wanted to or you would let it be.

Those people here who have donated are likely the people that are well aware of the suffering in the world and do things to help out with that situation as well. They're the people who give their change and restaurant leftovers to homeless people, too. I'm not trying to say that we're a bunch of Mother Theresa's on this site but people being charitable is usually not an isolated event.

Then there's the people here who feel the need to subjugate the efforts to help an individual by highlighting the plight of the many. What I don't get is what the intention here is. Do these people suggest what to do to help these people that are much worse off than Justin? No. So the only intentions that can be inferred is to create contention.

Yes there are people out there who have it worse off than Justin, help them. There are people out there with family members dying, support them. But neither of those situations should affect your ability or desire to help individuals in your sphere of influence whether its Justin or someone asking for change.

Ghandi has a great quote which amounts to "be the example of change you wish to see in the world." I strongly feel that if people in general did more to make a personal impact in other's lives as well as the more anonymous global impact they can have then a lot more people would get the hint and we'd make this a better place for everyone.

Nicole and I would like to thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and generosity. I really had no idea that Paul had put this together until late last night. When he told me that he did, I was so grateful to the point that I broke down in tears. I can tell you that these last 2 days have been a living nightmare and knowing that I had friends that cared for my situation is all that has gotten me by.

Since 5 pm on Wednesday watching my apartment complex in a full blown inferno, I've been on a 48 hour marathon to get a status on our pets ever since.

It ended in tragedy today when a vet called to confirm that our cat and dog were found dead from smoke inhalation. They were found asleep laying next to each other.

For those of you who didn't know Pennington and Boo...

    This is penny:

And you can all ask Mike Hansen about my relationship with Boo (the cat). Sorry - no online pictures at this time.

I'm saddened not to have these pets with me anymore. They were my life blood and my girlfriend's greatest companions.

    Regarding this site and donation...

I certainly do not expect anyone to donate money. Words of encouragement are enough for me to hear. However, those of you who have donated money, I can tell you that I am truly touched. It is an amazing gesture you have shown us.

Once again, thanks to all for your generosity and kind words. We will keep you all posted on our road to recovery.

    Justin and Nicole

ps - thanks coach. your donation has opened my eyes to the size of your heart. i would like to get in touch w/ you soon. - fartbox

Its funny that Hench doesnt want to start a moral debate, but the reason Paul has started this whole "Help Justin," is because of where his morals are.

Around 2 years ago while I was at college, a roommate of mine paralyzed himself while diving into a pool. He shattered his 5th vertebrae (C5), leaving him confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He was in the intensive care unit as well as rehab for over 5 months. He was without insurance. Now paint a mental picture of how much something like that would cost.

Close friends of his, as well as myself included, put forth a valiant effort to raise money for his medical bills. We had fund raisers, like what Paul has done, as well as concerts with bands that we knew around the area. Hundreds of strangers who didnt even know him came out, showed support and donated.

You dont need to know Justin, or for that fact like Justin, but what you can do is try and relate to the position he has been put in. I know for a fact that he will rise back to the top because he is just that kind of person. But to have everything you've owned, everything you've worked for diminish right in front of your eyes has to be like a knife to the heart.

I pray that Justin (and Nicole), get back on track to re-starting their life again. I do not feel that people need to publicly bash Justin for the situation he has been put in, nor do I think that Paul needs to be scrutinized for trying to be a good friend.

All I ask is you put yourself in his shoes. If you lost everything, wouldnt you want your friends there to help support you?

I think I made my point,
    Allen

This should be an advertisement for renters insurance.

I don't Justin is getting a bashing. Paul maybe is a bit.

Hench did end his first comment with this:

"Just being a wanker really, pointing out the human condition, hope the guy gets sorted out."

it's about people helping people, help people, ffs...

  • 23kon0

    my point was...

OK, so if someone else knows of someone in need of help, will they be able to ask QBN to put a link to it in the Editors choice?

Im not saying its a good or bad thing to donate money and whether people should or not

Im suggesting that Paul is maybe abusing his right as an Editor by posting this, that is all.

  • neue75_bold0

Would be cool if the QBN editors came together and made some posters or something that we could buy/bid on them with all proceeds going to Justin...

    • why the editors?
why not have an open comp. think it'd raise the standards
      23kon
    • good idea 23kondyspl
    • thought if it came from them, you lot would have less of a problem with it being posted here...neue75_bold
    • How about lets do some posters to raise money for the 3rd world...set

I seriously do not understand how you can construe my comments as something bad when it was clearly trying to get people to stop arguing with a bit of light-hearted design humor? Maybe you dont understand that type of humor even if it isn't the absolute best of humor. I honestly do not know if English is your first language because it is pretty obvious that I am just saying lets take a chill pill, help somebody out, and lets all go back to designing for the man (see the humor???).

Secondly you left out why I left those 2ndary jokes.

I started off by saying.... "You all need to really find something better to do than argue over if it's better to give to one person or the another. Just give to both, one or none. Now go make your graphical art."

As for me not being here as much, some of us have to work for a living and can't sit here everyday responding 13,723 times.

Coming here to, as you quote, get something out of QBN and leave? Are you serious? A person I knew just lost his whole life. I came to let people know (NEVER asked for anything) as I know he contributes here. In fact it was another person in the thread that said, hey maybe we help him out. He was currently on the road to his parents house and probably couldnt say what just happened. I never came here to get something out of QBN, I came to let you guys know something bad happened to somebody that contributes here. What am I possibly getting out of this????

When I was in college I was more active as I had more time. Now things have changed, I can't contribute as much as I want, and honestly, i don't come here as much as I used to because of things like this. People getting upset about the stupidest of things.

There is nothing else I can say to you as you have made up your mind that I was out to get somebody or some weird thing. So I have to step out.
