I've thought idly lately about what would happen if someone went back in time to the early '00s armed with some memes from the 2020s, and started posting them on all the old forums everywhere.

Would they resonate then as they do now?

Would they be so popular as to easily overtake Nyan Cat, Imma Chargin Mah Lazer/Shoop Da Woop, Objection, You're the Man Now Dog, and All Your Base?

    Or would they absolutely tank?

I think 'WOULD' would have what it takes, even back then. Not sure about anything else from the last few years, though.

The more I think about it, the more I want a sorta AI-trained smart interface with Illustrator (etc) where I can do whatever shit I'm doing on screen with a mouse and as I do it, explain what complex interactions I want thereafter vocally.

Like, you alt-mouse copy an object and you say aloud "name this new object 'left flap' and set its width to 120mm" so whilst you're dragging away the object to be copied and modified, you're giving it a name which you can subsequently refer to for modification later.

I mean, I don't particularly go out of my way to name objects in illustrator, because I don't much need to as it's all visual and that would just represent additional physical cruft on each operation. But if I could add that detail in by voice, in parallel? That could be handy.

I'm rambling. But I'm sure I have a point here.

The more complex the software, the more useful this kind of additional layer of interaction could be. Looking at you, 3D modelling and CAD

I've heard about people wanking into socks. I don't understand this concept. How is that possible? Is it an American thing for people without foreskins? Do they fill the sock with lotion? Do their socks have dried up cum in them, that they simply take care of in laundry? Ew? So confused.

I wonder if you could repurpose worn-out electric car batteries for installation in solar powered houses. If the batteries are at 40% capacity, it should be able to power an average home.

    Dumb idea? No expert.

  • imbecile2

Several companies and organizations are actively working on repurposing worn-out electric vehicle (EV) batteries for energy storage in homes and other applications. Here are some key players and projects in this space:

    Companies and Initiatives
    Nissan and Eaton - xStorage

Overview: Nissan, in partnership with Eaton, has developed the xStorage Home system, which uses recycled Nissan Leaf batteries to provide energy storage for homes.
Features: The system allows homeowners to store energy from solar panels or the grid and use it during peak times, providing energy efficiency and cost savings.
Benefits: It helps reduce electricity bills and carbon footprints by maximizing the use of renewable energy.
    Renault and The Mobility House

Overview: Renault, in collaboration with The Mobility House and other partners, has launched projects like the Advanced Battery Storage program in Europe.
Purpose: This initiative aims to store energy using second-life batteries from Renault EVs, helping stabilize the grid and support renewable energy integration.
Applications: Besides residential use, these batteries are also employed in larger-scale industrial settings.
    BMW - Battery Second Life

Overview: BMW has been experimenting with using second-life batteries from their electric vehicles, such as the i3, for energy storage solutions.
Projects: Their Battery Second Life project involves testing the feasibility of using these batteries in various applications, including home energy systems and public infrastructure.
    Tesla

Approach: While Tesla primarily uses new batteries in its Powerwall systems, they have explored second-life battery applications for larger projects, like grid storage, through initiatives such as their Tesla Energy division.
Potential: The company has the infrastructure and technology to expand into using second-life batteries in the future.
    General Motors (GM)

Initiative: GM has partnered with companies like ABB to repurpose used Chevy Volt batteries for energy storage.
Projects: They have deployed these batteries in various projects, including building-integrated systems and commercial energy storage solutions.
    BYD

Collaboration: BYD, a leading Chinese EV manufacturer, collaborates with several partners to develop second-life battery applications.
Deployment: Their batteries have been used in stationary storage systems that support renewable energy projects in China and beyond.
    Relectrify

Technology: This Australian company specializes in developing control systems that enable the efficient use of second-life batteries.
Applications: Relectrify’s technology allows these batteries to be used in both residential and commercial energy storage systems.
    Connected Energy

Solution: UK-based Connected Energy uses second-life batteries from Nissan and Renault EVs in its E-STOR systems, providing grid support and energy storage.
Projects: They have successfully implemented systems across Europe, offering scalable energy solutions for various needs.
    Aceleron

Innovation: Aceleron focuses on designing battery packs that can be easily maintained and repurposed, extending the life of used batteries.
Products: Their technology is used in energy storage systems for off-grid and backup power applications.
Enel and Nissan - Project Bondio

Purpose: This project aims to test the feasibility of using second-life EV batteries in a distributed energy storage network.
Applications: It provides insights into how these batteries can support grid stability and enhance renewable energy integration.
    Real-World Implementations
    The Johan Cruijff Arena, Amsterdam

Details: This iconic stadium uses a large-scale energy storage system comprising second-life Nissan Leaf batteries.
Benefits: The system helps balance the grid and provides backup power for the stadium’s events.
    Port of Rotterdam

Project: The port utilizes second-life EV batteries to power a sustainable energy storage system.
Impact: This helps reduce emissions and supports renewable energy usage at one of Europe’s busiest ports.
    German Energy Storage Projects

Implementation: Several projects across Germany utilize second-life batteries for grid stabilization and renewable energy storage.
Companies: Partnerships with automakers like BMW and Daimler have enabled these projects to demonstrate the viability of second-life applications.
