My daily news blackout starts today. Keeping my phone off my person, getting focused on work. I know it’s bad everywhere. I know it’s bad in nyc where several of my coworkers and friends are. The only thing I can do is focus on myself and the impact of those choices to my surrounding community.
We are all a little microcosm of a bigger system and we can only control our own actions. Do things the right way, trust that others in the community are doing the same. By extension that can help every other city fighting this, by requiring less resources and medical help in my town.

I've been trying to do more positive thinking, which is getting easier as long as I stay off news sites and such. I'm trying to stay narrowly focused on small things and small actions, hoping that others in my community are doing the same. Thinking about this as tens of thousands of microcosms of action and precaution that, if successful, are scalable from my home, to my street, to my neighborhood, to my wider local community, to my entire town, and onward.
NYC and the disaster there is a long way from the Chicago suburbs. I need to stay on top of the news but there's nothing I can do that helps NYC, or other areas beyond my immediate one. So, I can double-down on doing exactly what is needed just as I described above. I think a certain degree of tunnel vision is needed right now; obviously we can't deny the crisis growing everywhere, but we can attempt to stay sane by being narrowly focused on our own situation and how it scales around us, especially when others are being as diligent about their own safety and health.

Had a wander round the city centre tonight, usually this area would be full of folk drinking themselves into madness, at one of the endless amounts of pubs and clubs.
From about 10pm onwards it was almost completely empty, apart from a few homeless people, taxis and the occasional Deliveroo driver. It felt like being on an abandoned film set.
Spoke to a woman who was also wandering around that thought I was a tourist, she was out to see the city empty too.

When I finish my work day (WFH) my family treats me like I’ve been just been on a big break for 9 hours. Like I should be very rested and excited to see them because I’ve just been at my desk all day while they have been in the next room.
Meanwhile, I’ve had to work late some days and they act like it must be so hard on me to work a couple extra hours. But we’re not doing anything interesting in the evening anyway. It’s like “oh you want to pick another movie or show that I won’t even like? Great! Or perhaps we can all sit around and discuss what we all read on the internet today.”
I shouldn’t complain. Things could be so much worse.
- Haha.monospaced
- Work until 6 or so. Put kids to bed. Cook / eat / clear up from 8-9. Sit down at 9:15 to have an hour or so of my own time. SUCKS.DaveO

My wife and I and our 2 sons have been limiting our time outside in public for months because of COVID but now we can't even go outside and play in our backyard because we are surrounded by wild fires. We now have the worst air quality in the world!
I guess we should be thankfully that we live about 10 miles from the evacuation lines and still have our house and lives but we're going stir crazy!
I just went to get some supplies at the store and my eyes are burning from the 15 minute trip. This entire town is like the smoky side of a camp fire.- different disasters my man, this is not covid related...grafician
- oh wait, you live in the US, in California? Wow...my badgrafician
- and yes, I accept being bad here, the quality of my air rn is dictated by the guys outside fixing the boulevard before elections...grafician
- but good luck mate, stay safe!grafician
- jfc, I can't even imagine. As a new father myself I empathize, if it's not one life threatening thing it's another. Best of luck & hang in therewhatthefunk
- We're in Oregon. We were quarantining from COVID but now we're quarantining from the smoke. Its been 5 days and its still to smoky to go outside.fooler
