I'm planning on quitting my job and going solo somewhere in the next year. My core business will be web design & development work for local businesses. Already got a business name since 2008, and I'm not planning on working under my own personal name.
With that in mind, would it be weird if I refer to my business as a 'Design & development studio', even if I'm the sole proprietor?
Also, in your opinion, at what point do you think a business is a studio? Does it have to have a physical studio space, or does the work itself make it a studio?
Thanks!

Fake it till you make it. As a one man band, I'd call myself a design studio.

go for it - i'm a one man studio.
make some space that's only used for work.
the family are very rude and insist in calling my studio a shed.

Congrats!
Sounds like we do really similar work.
I ran my business as a 1-man-show for over 10 years. I never referred to myself as a "studio," an "agency," or anything similar.
I just called myself a "business."
The reason for me is personal. I kind of cringe at the connotations of the word "studio" because I've seen it abused too much.
I now run a 2-person business with my wife. We still don't call it a "studio" or an "agency." There's really not a good word to call it, so again, I just refer to it as a "business."
I'd like to think of us as the "anti-agency," but saying that sounds kinda snooty too, so I dunno...

Make it an "office"!
"The Office of [YOU] for Design & Development" sounds rather interesting, formal but not too formal, established and trustworthy, expert and dependable.
If you go with "studio" make it "The Studio of [YOU]" to imply that it's your personal studio and not a proper "studio studio" with crew.
Also if you want to expand in the coming years, a good definition will also be "[YOUR NAME] & Co." if you want to imply you're the main man but you also collaborate with other people as a network.
Good luck!

I would actually align it to whatever your future goal is. So if your goal is to have employees in the future, in a studio then yeah call It studio.

Some solid feedback here, thanks!
I guess most of my potential clients would read 'studio' and think of a multi-person agency. Which isn't all that bad to get their interest I guess, as long as I remain transparent about actually running it as a one-man business.

I think if you feel at all weird about calling your business a studio, then don't call it that - a studio is really just a place where some work gets done.
Grafician's suggestion at "office" isn't a bad one, one of the best little shops in Toronto goes by "The Office of Gilbert Li" and for a long while was just him. https://www.gilbertli.com/ but then, in the description they go and call themselves a studio. But I called them a shop... I don't think it really matters as long as you believe in what you're presenting.
