I think it's funny people object to paying for training but are willing to so much other shit in their lives like technology that will be half the price a year later.
The choice of reducing your stress for life for a 1 time fee is a no brainer to me. People spend more money on physical fitness for the same reasons - reduce health issues due to stress.
It is a foundation that helps others, pays the teachers and for spaces to do group meditation and workshops.
For my money I got 4 days of training. The first day was a beautiful ritual whereby you get your mantra. The following days were group classes where they explain the scientific and physical aspects, taking questions from people who may be suffering.
That itself was the best part - seeing people trying to better themselves.
- Right, so you paid $800-ish to get a mantra and be in a room with people asking some questions?nb
- I actually buy very little tech, btw, and I question why everyone around me does.
- sent from my 2011 MBPnb - I have a bunch of friends who done the classes, they all have enjoyed the training and don't believe it was any kind of scam.Noggin
- I guess my issue with it is that the barrier to entry is higher than it should be for a very specific form of meditation.jtb26
- When in reality the techniques employed are very similar to other varieties and can be learned for no cost but will have as much benefit.jtb26

Serious questions:
1. Why do I need the training?
2. Why can I not come up with my own mantra? I'm a designer, I come up with cool shit all the time.

You have successfully convinced me to stop trying it.

I do mindfulness meditation on the regular. There's a fair amount of emerging evidence to supports the benefits. Personally, it helps me cope with ADHD, depression and occasional anxiety.
Today TM is a bit of a racket. I think the idea was that initially you could go down to your local studio, pay $50, and learn to meditate. That fee enabled the studios to stay open so the practice could spread. Now you can find guided meditations on youtube and the app store. No one needs local studios anymore, especially because they're so expensive to maintain that apparently it takes $900/person to sustain them.
- I nearly was a buddist monk in my youth and did a lot of meditation. I found meditating to null your inner voice ... not helpful. Very interested in TMmugwart
- but it does seem a scam. in London its like £250-300 it seems and thats alot. $50 is fair price.mugwart
- Rent costs a lot more these days. The difference between mindfulness and TM doesn't seem so vast to me mechanically.jtb26
- It's not really about nulling your inner voice. Just practicing your ability to separate your thoughts from your perception of reality.jtb26
- yes. seperating thoughts from perception of reality. a layering of thoughts. niiicedocpoz

I started doing TM a couple of years ago. I had been thinking about doing it for a long time as many of my peers talked about how it helped them.
I developed anxiety just before I started doing it and I can say it has helped keep it at bay.
I feel better and more grounded when I do my meditation. I come up with a lot of answers and creative ideas during the 20 minutes as well.
I have a few close friends who started, one particular who was stressing a lot and smoked weed to de-stress now just uses meditation instead.
I am totally fine with paying the $900 it cost here (in the Bay Area), as it goes to help the foundation, contributes to victims, school kids etc and pay the teachers.
- even relaxation does cost money, modern times eh.helloeatbreathedrive
