Any advice on a good and simple writing app for heavy note filing and pieces up to 30-50 pages ?
I've gotten to the point where I have ridiculous amounts of notes on too many overlapping themes and projects, and feel completely discouraged by the idea of compiling them and writing though I keep making more notes!
The apps everybody seems to recommend (Ulysses etc) use markup/markdown, but as much as I've tried I cannot enjoy that process, it just makes me cringe to work this way.
So far I've stuck to Word, but that results in too many files, and it's just decided to start displaying a mix of fonts, I just want to punch my screen, help!

typora has literally changed my workflow. it's a pretty good markdown editor but i've been using it to organize and more importantly find my various thoughts, notes etc. killer app for me.
typora is simple, small and has a lot of useful features. (including building heading contents on the fly) i've structured it so that it autosaves into a cloud drive and this has just been fucken an amazing addition to my life.

IA Writer does the trick and isn't as convoluted as Ulysses (which I'm trying to get along with right now):
"Writer removes distractions. Giving you a calm, focused, writing space."

Tried a bunch of these, Scrivener looks like the winner for my needs and habits, I'll see how the trial goes.
Thanks everyone, and mugwart keep us posted on your app!

not exactly what you are looking, but I really like that app when it comes to writing

A month later : turns out Scrivener actually helped me work around most of my writing issues so I can definitely recommend that.
It's a great tool to compile everything related to a project in one place, connect stuff together and separate different sections of a longer piece.
Haven't tried the ios app yet but it will probably be a useful addition.

I also use scrivener and i can recommend it. Easy to set labels, formats, make drafts for a publisher, put all the research (links, texts and images) together...
