Have you watched any of these yet? What did you think?

Not watched but, that trailer music, the tribal drums, dramatic orchestration etc, it's time that sort of thing was banned. It makes the trailer way way too dramatic... It's a doc about design! not some triller adventure movie! Some cool blippy beepy minimal techno music would suit it better.

This looks great. I will have to check it out.

I'm sure we're all going to love the segments not in our particular speciality and rag on the ones that are lol

Vere well done, not at all like the trailer
- shaft0
Judging by the trailer, it's a design documentary mockumentary.

I'll definitely be checking this out.

Episodes 2, 3 and 4 are a beast.

I've watched episodes 1, 2 and the Paula Scher one. They were really good. Pretty inspiring to me. The one thing I am getting from them is to keep creating, in any medium. Make mistakes and let them push you. I really enjoyed them so far. going to watch the rest for sure.

that architecture episode with Bjarke Ingles, I want to live in one of these buildings. Also stage designer Es Devlin is living my dream life. That first episode was very inspiring, something Christoph Niemann says translates perfectly to how I prefer to work creatively.. "The approach of not planning opens a new door, leads to these magic moments."

VERY mediocre filmmaking and story telling. Made by the Machine for the average minds - zero creativity involved.
- might be true but same can be said for 99.99% of shows out there._niko
- Couldn't agree more, thus the equation:
TV shows = garbage (99.99% of times)pr2 - have any recommendations on the top .01% that you speak of? I liked this, so can't wait to check out better ones.capn_ron
- Sure Adam Curtis' "Pandora Box" (6 episodes) or "The Living Dead" (3 ep) or "The Century of the Self" (4 ep).pr2
- Thanks! I'll check them out. The Living Dead is the only one I'm not finding. Just Night of the Living Dead stuff.capn_ron

Two of the three episodes of Abstract I saw were extended commercials for major brands.
They were good, but it felt awkward to be peddled a brand positioning infomercial presenting recent or near future products disguised as a documentary.

Yo PR2, did you ever think that this kind of docs can be a stepping stone for many people to get an interest in design. This highbrow attitude really doesn't promote our field in a good way. I run an interview site where we goal is actually to democratize design and art so people can form an opinion about it. Or just learn more about it in without getting the opinion that they are novices. If these docs can get people more interested in design, than good on them.

tank,
You can't get "interested in design" without getting interested in why those designs get created, who's paying (thus manipulating) for it and what the intended purpose is. Even more so when you talk about art as "what's behind the surface" is the fundamental question of art. This talk of "democratization" is utterly false as you are trying to democratize only one aspect of design (so more people care about it) and have zero interest in discovering what goes on behind the curtains. In effect you are trying to create a perfect consumer. And so you have, as Raf said, thinly disguised infomercials for brands peddled as actual documentary. In your "democratic" world, what happens when people can't see through the BS?
- ben_1
Seems like you're expecting Adam Curtis levels of insight into industries largely in existence only because of consumerism (which admittedly would be cool), likely not going to happen with Netflix. If you can get past the self congratulatory tone of the series then it's decent television.
- "Likely not going to happen on Netflix" because we "allow" it by eating the garbage they toss at us.pr2
- Dude really, you sound frustrated. Do something about it than. Fund a doc, to make what you want.tank02
- Already have: http://shouldertheli…
and are days away from finishing another one.pr2 - Pr2 - this doc looks great but art and design are, by definition two different things. Often complimenting each other, but still opposing purposes.ben_
- ...and by that virtue, it's appropriate that a brand like Netflix would encourage advertorial.ben_

You are not reading what iI say. It serves as stepping stone to get interested in more. I'm more than tired of your 'art bs' on this board. Design & Graphic Design is meant for the masses. Art is something else, but generally, it is the same, because it's about how an image touches you. And some people will go deeper into it, but that is not necessary. If I take my nephew & nice to a show of Tuymans or Ellsworth Kelly its all about that small experience. Its up the viewer.
I'm not a fan of the narrative a lot of gallerists slap on to sell more.
If you want to really make a doc, that is an interesting one, the Art market. You always come here with an attitude I never saw when interviewing artists. People like Tuymans or Corbijn are humble kind people who never criticize means to get art or design appreciation out there. And you, well you're a bit the Nelson from the Simpsons of this board.
- pr2-3
In return, you are not hearing what i'm saying.
Why make a series about design and not question the fundamentals???
Those questions are hugely more fascinating & important than some banal one liners praising some brand.
This is not about going deeper anymore even, it's about selectively picking some questions to answer and conveniently forgetting about the others. It's about this tired BS that "it's up to the viewer" thus taking away power from the collective experience and giving it into the hands of the Big Boys (as if they ever were lacking power to influence our ideas in the first place). And if you want to talk about the art market, there is already a fascinating series, Robert Hughes' "Shock of the New" and even more so "The Mona Lisa Curse".
