also, everything settles in to the most efficient design, we drool over the advances in cars but design wise, they're all pretty much the same, just slight variations on the same theme.

compare it to early design when they were still trying to work shit out and optimize everything.

    • To me you picked a subject that hasn't stagnated the way the web has. Cars have various functions but many of us also choose them for design which vary greatly.SteveJobs
    • I don't know, you might be right but we also get awesome innovations like new grill or Bluetooth or led lights as "new" model features_niko
    • I think the analogy is good, if you were to go to a website that has right side navigation or scrolls left are right rather then up or down..eryx
    • It would be like stepping into a car that steers from the back or the lights are on the hood. There might be some advantages but because...eryx
    • there is a conventional design that works for everyone you wont see the same thing on a website from 15 years ago today.eryx

    Tools. It's all about tools.

Right now a select few have the skills required to do amazing websites. Back when flash was king, the tool for design was in designers hands. Although bloated etc, Flash was a much more expressive tool. There is no tools available for designers to just build sites. The era we are in is sort of like type setting. Once Quark came along suddenly designers were in control, and with it came freedom of expression. This made magazines like Raygun possible, where before it would never had existed.

The tools will come. My bet is on a node based system (not unlike 3D software) where you can plug functionality together. You'll be able to just wire the site together. No one should need to know how to code to do 90% of the sites on the internet.

In the long term, if I was solely a web developer I'd be seriously thinking of upskilling fast. They are the metal typesetters of our time.

    • seriously, it takes 100 times longer to do the simplest things these days, in flash it was so easy. You want to center an element? drop it in the fucking center_niko
    • animations? piece of cake. Videos? done. sick interactivity? easy. Now to do anything half cool you need to do it first in flash, the give it to a team of 5_niko
    • crack programmers to replicate it using 10 different languages and 30 libraries of bloated nonsense._niko
    • over complicated nonsense most of the time.Centigrade
    • The web is a Bore-A-thon...99.999... of all website look the same. It look like they all use some variation of a WordPress theme.utopian
    • ^ they pretty much do.ETM

Responsive and adaptive design for enterprise media, ecomm, real estate, and consumer product design is in it's infancy. Yes, doing a band website that is super progressive has become almost extinct due to people wanting a sqaurespacesque site for $50 but for enterprise it's a different ball game.

I'm doing 100+ page hi fi Axure & Sketch projects with multiple breakpoints and A/B testing container systems. We're building our own grids based on user behavior instead of using bootstrap and while yes, these sites tend to have a similar looks we're all trying to push the envelope b/c of the necessity for them to be responsive/adaptive.

With multiple breakpoints I feel as though I'm designing 4-5 versions of every site now so the need for a bit of a more user friendly design system is a requirement. I'm amazed as to how many jr designers I work with will develop enhancements to our products and ignore grids, styles, colors, etc. I'll get a design with 27 different hex values for grey and no adherence to the grid at all. From an artsy fartsy perspective perhaps it's boring but from a technical/UX perspective it's just getting started imho.

    Standardization is boring.

I mean all roads look the fucking same, mates. But we have to fucking drive on them.

    I blame Bootstrap...

    • I blame lazy designers who do not want to customize Bootstrap.mekk

^ Niko's argument that there is a single optimal design that things settle into is flawed in that the human mind craves variance. We desire form that evokes feelings and leaves impressions, not just ones that serve use.

And if you think of it, the need for those dream forms are themselves a "user need". It's just one we don't quantify or qualify when designing websites.

    i blame mono.

i also place the blame on sites not having a purpose in mind other than to be on the internet.

    but, mostly mono.

    • Its UX, user centred design it's developed consistency, but suppressed originalilty and creativity. Everything looks the fucking same!!!!!! bland, boring..Bullitt
