  Tools. It's all about tools.

  Right now a select few have the skills required to do amazing websites. Back when flash was king, the tool for design was in designers hands. Although bloated etc, Flash was a much more expressive tool. There is no tools available for designers to just build sites. The era we are in is sort of like type setting. Once Quark came along suddenly designers were in control, and with it came freedom of expression. This made magazines like Raygun possible, where before it would never had existed.

  The tools will come. My bet is on a node based system (not unlike 3D software) where you can plug functionality together. You'll be able to just wire the site together. No one should need to know how to code to do 90% of the sites on the internet.

  In the long term, if I was solely a web developer I'd be seriously thinking of upskilling fast. They are the metal typesetters of our time.

  • seriously, it takes 100 times longer to do the simplest things these days, in flash it was so easy. You want to center an element? drop it in the fucking center_niko
  • animations? piece of cake. Videos? done. sick interactivity? easy. Now to do anything half cool you need to do it first in flash, the give it to a team of 5_niko
  • crack programmers to replicate it using 10 different languages and 30 libraries of bloated nonsense._niko
