US$2 trillion wiped from global stocks as U.K. votes to leave EU
- < Does this mean very wealthy people are losing money??robotron3k
- It means the estimated value of equity had to be re-priced based on new info. $2trillion didn't disappear; it never really existed.monNom

Strange world we live in where the progressives prefer global banking elite ruling over national democratic self-governance.
- I agree but the problem is uk doesn't have the leaders/rulers to be able to handle this transition.mugwart
- national democratic self-governance sounds good on paper. we've just shat on our paper.Fax_Benson
- Gross over-simplifications about complex issues like this post can help explain why the UK just voted to cripple itself.nb
- Right, because labeling half a country racist, xenophobic idiots is the rational way of looking at complex issues.IRNlun6
- Varoufakis would agree with this "oversimplification"pr2
- They did already have national self-governance, just with some compromises in exchange for economic access.yuekit
- It's really economists and classical liberals that would most strongly favor trade deals and trading blocks like this, rather than "progressives" whatever thatyuekit
- Strange world we live in when calling someone 'progressive' is deemed to be pejorative. Like the opposite is something to be proud of.face_melter
- IRNlun6, an intelligent voice on the subject, finally..set
- farage is an ex banker, the UK has an entirely unelected chamber, who voted for Boris to be next PM?lowimpakt

- People are idiots, yeah, but to my mind this says more about the complete failure of the EU to project its relevance and the campaign to stay in itdetritus

I won't pretend to know much about what's going on, but I thought I'd share Alan Greenspan's comments about the vote, and the potential for some bad impact to the world economy:
"This is the worst period, I recall since I've been in public service. There's nothing like it, including the crisis — remember October 19th, 1987, when the Dow went down by a record amount 23 percent? That I thought was the bottom of all potential problems. This has a corrosive effect that will not go away."

Bad branding, should never have called their product "Eewww".

Dismal outlook for the Euro and the EU. The first sailor jumps ship.

...when grandparents fuck up the future of the grandchildren. Before closing the door, Gibraltar return, please.
- 'return' haha, like it's been your in any relevant recent historical context :) Blame the Dutch—they're the ones you pissed off before it was handed over to us.detritus
- if you're serious though, you could as laughably offer to hand back Ceuta and Melilla, but that'd just be a ridiculous thing to ask, wouldn't it?detritus
- Also, the Gibraltarians aren't really too keen on your government - perhaps something to do with it acting like a truculent child for the last 40 years.detritus
- You're being a bit simplistic this now Nairn... Gibraltar is a "niña mimada" of spanish and uk gov. With tons of illegalities there, both take profit of itOBBTKN

From: Mugwart's post above:
Across the United Kingdom on Friday, Britons mourned their long-cherished right to claim that Americans were significantly dumber than they are.
Luxuriating in the superiority of their intellect over Americans’ has long been a favorite pastime in Britain, surpassing in popularity such games as cricket, darts, and snooker.
But, according to Alistair Dorrinson, a pub owner in North London, British voters have done irreparable damage to the “most enjoyable sport this nation has ever known: namely, treating Americans like idiots.”
“When our countrymen cast their votes yesterday, they didn’t realize they were destroying the most precious leisure activity this nation has ever known,” he said. “Wankers.”

"A quick note on the first three tragedies. Firstly it was the working classes who voted for us to leave because they were economically disregarded and it is they who will suffer the most in the short term from the dearth of jobs and investment. They have merely swapped one distant and unreachable elite for another one. Secondly, the younger generation has lost the right to live and work in 27 other countries. We will never know the full extent of the lost opportunities, friendships, marriages, and experiences we will be denied. Freedom of movement was taken away by our parents, uncles, and grandparents in a parting blow to a generation that was already drowning in the debts of our predecessors. Thirdly and perhaps most significantly, we now live in a post-factual democracy. When the facts met the myths they were as useless as bullets bouncing off the bodies of aliens in a HG Well novel. When Michael Gove said 'the British people are sick of experts' he was right. But can anybody tell me the last time a prevailing culture of anti-intellectualism has lead to anything other than bigotry?"
- are u saying young Brits won't be special anymore? No job opportunities, expensive holidays, lost loves and friends... sad, now you're like the rest of world.robotron3k

and one more:
"This is the glaring contradiction in the muscular nationalism of right-wing populism, blended with isolationism, that seeks to withdraw from international unions: It cannot shape a better world by shutting the world out. The same people who cheer when Trump laments the decline of American leadership want to ignore key global issues and put "America First." The people who voted for Brexit, attempting to create a border between Britain and challenges such as the refugee crisis, seem to think Britain can solve such problems without consulting Germany or France or, worst of all to them, Brussels.
The world doesn't work that way, and it hasn't for decades. Ever-increasing globalization has created an unprecedented surge in prosperity, but it has also ushered in jarring changes. The rough edges of those changes can only be overcome with more aggressive cooperation and engagement, not less. Whether it's the risks of terrorism, the tragic flow of refugees, or economic shocks, Britain cannot solve problems alone and neither can the United States."

So where are the fucking mods on this site? They made a thread about how all politics go in the politics thread, so this asshat comes along and breaks these new rules. Surely he will be disciplined just like they said, correct?
- It looks like I am free to start a hillary clinton thread then and not get in "trouble". Good to know!CygnusZero4

Just to set one record straight for those who don't know a lot about the world outside their backyard - the UK is still part of Europe, British people are still European. Europe is a continent in which the UK sits. The EU is an agreement between member states... Jesus, the last time I have to say this.
- turns out a lot of the UK's population also doesn't know this ;)monospaced
- and although this is true, it's kind of irrelevant because Brexit isn't about the UK leaving Europe, and I haven't seen ANYONE even imply that it wasmonospaced
- true dat - an actual distant friend on facebook posted today "I still want to be European, I like Europe..." Like your good ole motherland this place is full offadein11
- idiots, and the idiots are winning.fadein11
- @mono - a lot of people on here do not realise the difference between Europe as a continent and the EU as a collection of member states. fact. chill winston.fadein11
- looks back on this thread and a lot of people have no idea what is going on, which is fair enough... but don't attack me for stating a simple fact. And no shitfadein11

- that was kind of my point in posting which you obviously missed.fadein11
- I'm not attacking you :) I also didn't see anyone on QBN confused about Brexit, as you had implied. lol. FFS. Sherlock. ;)monospaced
- and please, don't imply I missed your point, because my response only explains that I understood it perfectlymonospaced
- okay - bad day here... sorry. reread the thread, it sums up what a lot of silly people fell for over here. scary days... my apologies.fadein11
- mine too... never meant to argue, and yes, today's a bad day in general, scary shit all aroundmonospaced
- the world has gone a little strange... if the US election goes insane as well (although either way isn't looking good) we have some dark days ahead methinks.fadein11
