Finally saw this, maybe it was reading all these negative comments but didn't think it was THAT terrible.
But wow...what a dark, grim movie haha especially the ending. Reminded me of Alien 3 in that regard.
- Alien3 was good thoughmugwart
- i felt very meh ... just wish more time was spent on the Engineers instead of the same ole Horror movie trope of humans being dropped one by one.Ramanisky2
- Yeah I understand the disappointment it didn't depict more of the engineers world. It seems like even with a big budget film like this they would rather leaveyuekit
- that to the imagination rather than try and fail.yuekit
- true but I wish they had taken that riskRamanisky2
- Would have made for a much more interesting movieRamanisky2

It was as bad as Prometheus, if not worse.
The characters were the barest outlines and too numerous/indistinct. I think I only caught two of their names, but I was never really sure how many there were. Crudup's conflict over being a man of faith (is that all he's allowed to play now since coming out as Super Christian?) not wanting it held against him in a rational world was interesting, but my description of it is about as much attention as it got on screen. Tennessee is from Tennessee so he wears a Tennessee cowboy hat and drinks Tennessee whisky: what is this paint-by-numbers bullshit being passed off as characterization? Motives are paper thin.
Michael Fassbender kissing Michael Fassbender is a perfect metaphor for how self-indulgent, narcissistic, and fan-service-oriented this franchise has become, recycling the core elements of Alien and Aliens without any real understanding for why those movies have been put on a pedestal by fans. If there are any more Alien movies I hope Scott is kept as far from them as possible, because someone needs to break it out of the rut the franchise has fallen into aping itself.
Throwing in Giger sketches was a shark-jump moment for sure.
- I said it from the jump, this was going to suck and it did.severian
- Prometheus might have ben "bad" to you, but they should have stuck that story and improved it. At least that was an original thought.severian
- Just realized I confused Crudup with Jim Caviezel, so ignore that bit.i_monk
- I don't trust you cuz you don't like star wars.pango

I binged watched Alien 1-3, and Prometheus over the weekend. I hadnt seen any of them in a very long time.
I only really liked Alien. Aliens was just some dumb brainless space marine nonsense. Didnt like it. Alien 3 obviously isnt even worth getting into. Idk what happened with that movie since it had such a talented director on it. My only guess is he wasnt that involved in the story, or the studio got in the way somehow.
This series probably gets way more attention than it deserves. There really is only 1 good movie in it, and it came out a million years ago. I actually liked Prometheus, it just could have been a lot better, but its so different than all of the others, its almost like a spinoff.
- ... I like Alien 3! The original script would have been interesting. Wooden planet infested with monks!mugwart
- Blasphemy! Aliens is a damn masterpiece.inteliboy
- No it isnt. Its alright. Its really not that great.CygnusZero4
- Aliens is a B movie with a blockbuster budget. The tone is so different from the first movie. I enjoy it for different reasons. But Alien is the masterpiece IMODRIFTMONKEY
- @mugs The original 3 script was so good! I hate they didn't go with it, was such an interesting concept.garbage
- It was. A great read. But I enjoyed three. Some great actors in there and one of them my fav doctor who! (whom was just in the worse film)mugwart
- Can either of you share a link to said script? would like a read...detritus
- Is it the Gibson one?
http://www.awesomefi…detritus - Aliens is an A+ B-movie. One of the best ever.sarahfailin
- Aliens is a masterpiece. Even if you don't like it. It's a film that is studied, and set the bar for action films to this day.inteliboy
- I'm with intelliboy. I'm not gay or owt.MrT

In the first Alien, humans arrive on some fucked up planet and come across a spaceship, a bizarre alien spaceship... the design and culture and everything inside this ship is insanely alien... It is one of the very few, if only films ever made that truly feels like you are experiencing something that is ALIEN.
But now, by the end of these prequels, Alien is going to be so much smaller and boring... "Oh yeah, that thing is just a spacesuit for a big species of white dudes". "Yeah that alien is just a weapon created by a human android!" "Oh thats how that spaceship crashed!" "oh that's who Ripleys mother was!" etc etc etc.

- even a single episode of westworld was way better than this crap. the last dinner trailer was sh't. i m not feeling the cast at all. just blahhelloeatbreathedrive
- After the disappointment of Prometheus you'd think they/he would be more careful...but I guess it'll make easy moneyformed
- wtf is this?CygnusZero4

Prometheus wasnt terrible, but it wasnt great either. Some of the acting and script were awful. Typical characters... the nerdy guy, the douchebag guy... knew they were going to die. Very important scenes where they were examining the alien head that they brought back to the ship, and you have a main character off on the background sitting on a table drinking wine like nothing was going on. Awful directing.
But the visuals and overall design were great.
- The creative team had enough experience to do something outstanding. I think that's why people were so disappointed.mugwart

As much as I hate to admit it, Spooky might be right...
- expectations = very low.sarahfailin
- yup, I'm happy if it outdoes Prometheus, couldn't stand the big white guys and the 3D HUDs and starchartsWeyland
- Someone who's worked with him said he's always changing stuff and coming up with stuff whilst shooting - manically so - for better or worse.inteliboy

also, what in 80 years we are still using machine guns and shot guns?
gimme a break.. where the fuck is my laser blasters and shit..
none of this stupid 19th century technology in space.- Kinetic weaponry will be with us for hundreds of years yet - only difference I can see is smaller projectiles on electric rails.. *perhaps*detritus
- I mean, unless some nooPhysX comes along to disrupt the predicted order of things...detritus
- Yeah, projectile weapons are efficient and cost effective. Railguns are the next delicious step - firing *any* object at ballistic speeds.face_melter
- One of my favorite William Gibson pieces is from Count Zero I think - a railgun is used to destroy a research facility by throwing 150kg of ice at it.face_melter
- ha! one of my all-time favourite weapons (from either Eagle or Starblazer) was a gun that fired icicles, so the projectile melted before it could be analysed..detritus
- Also, another (unrelated) old favourite..
https://en.wikipedia…detritus - Oh shit! Starblazer! I think I know the issue you mean as well. With the blind private detective guy. Top comic.face_melter
