I'm still wondering what my future job will look like. I'm doing the same job since 15 years and I like it. But there's high probability that I may lose that job in the next 2-5 years.

I'm thinking of specialising into a specific thing but I dont know what...

What would you suggest me to jump in? Something that will be in demande in the next 15-20 years

    - I know basic to medium CSS+HTML coding. I like it OK, but I dont have lots of fun and patience as soon as it become complicated and challenging.

    - I'm OK in illustration. I could become better if I were doing this seriously everyday. Hard to make a living out of this tho..

    - I'm a good graphic designer for print. But print isn't the future really.

    - I'm a ok-good photographer. But its super tough to make a name in that business, there's photographer everywhere!

    - I like photo retouching even if I didn't done it very often. Is it a promising job for the future?

    - I was thinking of Data Visualisation Designer, news media are in big need of this to publish stuff on their platforms and on social medias, but from what I saw, the future of this seems to push it a lot into the interactive and dynamic content on websites, that mean lots of coding.

So, what are my options? I dont know. I would like to concentrate on 1 thing and become very good at it. And I would like that thing to be in need on the market in the next years.

There's a great future in plastics. Think about it.

    You think too much Bennn.

Almost all of the old-schoolers on this site are in the same boat. Job descriptions evolve daily because they are based on hyped buzz words and ridiculous terminology that no one can actually follow. Most job board role descriptions are written by people that have no clue or interest in the actual design function of a job. They copy/paste from a torrent of places and include everything under the sun that you should be perfect at (whether it be program or position).

after some time you develop a filter for those descriptions which will help you to narrow down the recruiters who can be taken seriously.

Animation isn't going anywhere... have you thought about combining your illustration / design / photography into motion?(you can easily stick to 2D although you'll be limiting yourself a bit)

Like anything these days you're going to find yourself lost for a moment if you're just getting started in any application... but you'll have a head-start if you know photoshop / illustrator etc.

We are always going to have to learn / keep-up with the tech in our field if we wish to continue to work in our field... do what you can to shed your fears of coding / understanding difficult or tedious concepts pertaining to the tech involved in production. If you think of this stuff merely as another 'hammer' in your toolkit you'll find yourself craving these challenges rather than running from them.

You're not dumb, benny!! By the sound of things you're in a position to kind of pick and choose... don't limit yourself. <3

    • thanks m8Bennn
    • "Animation isn't going anywhere..." what makes you say that?vivid
    • look around you, vivid... pretty much everything bleeps and bloops visually these days... billboards, smart phones, kiosks... there are screens everywhere.PonyBoy

    Propane and propane accessories?

Give 3D a whirl, if you're serious it doesn't take long to learn fundamentals which can be transferred between different programs. Having a background in 2D (Photoshop and photography) helps a great deal because you can integrate them into your workflow - need a backdrop or texture, make them yourself instead of relying on others.

Highend Image postprod for advertising will always be a thing imo

Sounds like you have the skillset of a smart art school grad.

The world will always need nice type and logos and apps and interfaces and illustrations.

    Maybe learn app design?

Do what you love, find big clients, pay your bills.

At the moment, I feel the big thing for the next years is app and interface design. Everything is on a screen these day, so everything needs an interface. I guess UI Design would be my best bet.

Anyone have a job spec for UI Designer? I would like to know what skills I need.

    • how funny, i just found out there's a UI Designer job posted on the job board at my work! I can see exactly what they ask.Bennn
