Internet as we know it is dying?
I know a few teenagers who, them and their friends, don't own a computer. All they have are smartphone and tablet.
You know what that mean?
An entire generation is growing up with the idea that the Internet is a bunch of apps.
You and me know the internet as a bunch of websites... Huge difference.
So, don't wonder any longer, the future of all this is apps. For an entire generation, websites will be things their parents and grand-parents were consulting back in the days.
Here, a picture of me while i'm writing those lines:
- What do you think?

The internet is just a network, and it's only growing. You're really just talking about interfaces, I'd say. Apps on a phone are really not all that different from websites considering they're just interactive screens, one large with a cursor, the other small with a touch interface.
- I'm glad I didn't decide to specialize in any web-specific technologies. They change too often.monospaced
- yeah you need to be up to date for all your career, always learn new stuff. Some people like it i guess. But its the same for apps.Bennn

- Sounds like a major chore. I'm happy remaining a more big picture designer.monospaced

Apps / websites are part of the internet - I think your terminology may be wrong.
Websites will become more and more like apps, in fact there will come a point when apps may die off as HTML delivers most of what native code can.
Companies and individuals will always need websites anyway unless the app delivery method changes radically.- there 'may' come a pointfadein11
- who wants to go search something on google then be taken to a link for an app to download - that aint gonna happen.fadein11
- yup.chukkaphob

if you mean the internet is becoming useful, then sure
- it's always been useful; it's evolving and becoming easier to use.chukkaphob

To say the Internet is dying would be like saying roads are dying.

What is The Internet?
The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. Information that travels over the Internet does so via a variety of languages known as protocols. What is The Web (World Wide Web)?
The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the Internet. The Web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data. Web services, which use HTTP to allow applications to communicate in order to exchange business logic, use the the Web to share information. The Web also utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to access Web documents called Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Web documents also contain graphics, sounds, text and video. The Web is a Portion of The Internet
The Web is just one of the ways that information can be disseminated over the Internet. The Internet, not the Web, is also used for email, which relies on SMTP, Usenet news groups, instant messaging and FTP. So the Web is just a portion of the Internet, albeit a large portion, but the two terms are not synonymous and should not be confused.- yeah I know. I was more talking about the packaging. Websites vs apps. I know behind both, its a bunch of networks.Bennn

Websites are turning into apps. Like, a website is now boxed in an icon on your desktop. Know what I mean? For lots of young people, this is internet; icons that leads to a specific place.
Creating websites is easy. Creating apps is not for everyone.
Almost anyone can create a website. Almost everyone can't create an app.
You see where i'm going?
Internet will be own by big corporations.
- aliastime1
Get off mah lawn!
- Bennn0
and for 95% of people over 55 y-o, Internet is Facebook.
- monospaced0
I disagree, Ben. Once upon a time websites couldn't be created by anyone, which is why there are web designers and companies. But now I can make a nice site myself without them.
Same thing will happen, and is happening, with apps. The fact that there are millions of apps, most of them shit, is evidence that pretty much anyone can create one.
The internet will never be "owned" by big corporations either. Any attempt ever at regulating it, or its content, has failed miserably. Even suggesting it pretty much sounds like infringement of basic human rights.
The internet will always be for the people, by the people ... and porn.
- to a degree yes, but the internet certainly isn't the democratic/alternati... platform it was back in the 90's. but that's fine, its big enough to cater for bothfadein11
- True, but when I see how a revolution in the middle east was fueled by the youth using twitter, then I have faith that in some places it still ismonospaced
- How do you figure it could 'never' be owned by big corps mono? They are trying real hard...bklyndroobeki
- Because I'm old enough to know how the internet came about I guess. its more in the hands of the geeks and people than you might think.monospaced
- It's not centralized, by definition. Plus nobody on the planet would stand for having that threatened in any way.monospaced
- Not arguing w/ you. I just if the gen. public knows how much legal advocacy, lobbying, and ground work goes into keeping access open. To say "nobody"bklyndroobeki
- would stand for it, maybe nobody in our circles.bklyndroobeki

Apps are not going to take over the web.
As the capabilities of browsers advance they will be able to incorporate many of the features that native apps allow.
The web is a free and open place.
Apps are closed off ecosystems reliant on a certain device / operating system in order to function.
If history has taught us anything over the past 20+ years of the web, is that open languages and technologies are the ones that are going to stick around.
- < thisfadein11
- agreechukkaphob
- apple is not exactly "open languages and technologies" and they are thriving because people will accept anything packaged nicely.pr2
- monospaced0
Apps, anyway, are just another stepping stone along the way. They're here today, top of the pack for how internet is consumed/shared. Tomorrow it'll be something completely different.
Fuck me if people are still looking at stupid screens, tapping on icons to get shit done in 10 years.
- Bennn0
I hear what you say, but you're forgetting one important point.... Point that started my reflekshun...
Websites = computers (desktop or laptop)
Apps = smartphones and tabletsLOTS of people don't own a computer anymore...
Tablets and smartphone are closed environments (OS) ...
So, thats why I think apps will take over.
(just a reflexion, thinking out loud, i dont know really)
- screen + input device - who cares what its called?fadein11
- Totally disagree.fadein11
- exactly, a phone/tablet IS a computermonospaced
- But on a phone/tablet, apps are the Kings. Not websites.Bennn
- nobody's arguing you on that, Ben :)monospaced
- YES YOU ARE!!!!!1!
;-)Bennn
- Bennn0
I was talking about a generation growing up with apps. That said generation will create the Internet of tomorrow. For them websites is old stuff.
- monospaced0
Ben, you couldn't be more right in your observations. But, respectfully, you're missing our point. A phone/tablet is just a really mobile computer. Not really different in the big scheme of things.
- you like surfing the web on a tablet? Not me. I like apps on tablet. See what i mean.Bennn
- in my opinion, apps are just more web surfingmonospaced
- Bennn-1
And for many many tennagers. Internet is apps, yeah, and internet is social media, internet is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat... They go on the "old internet of websites" to read stuff on Wikipedia for their school work.
- chukkaphob6
Aren't you stating the trivial & obvious here, Bennn?
It's like saying -- "whoa, I bet less people will use the typewriter, cause look - a desktop computer!"
