Had a great vacation there recently. My friends who live there showed me around some of the non-touristy areas, and it's actually an up-and-coming place for young professionals. The old neighborhoods in the Garden District are starting to feel a little "cool" and contemporary, something that is apparently new to this old area.
I can't wait to go back and explore their big park, join in on a second line parade, and eat more of that fried awesomeness.

I lived there for 8 years. It's the best. Really changing a lot these days. Gentrification like crazy. The Bywater is getting a grocery store on St. Roch after like decades of not having one-- could be a good place to look for properties if you're buying.
A friend of mine got a house for really cheap in Gentilly, which is not a preferred neighborhood for practically anyone, but there are houses in every price range in the city of New Orleans.
Don't get a place on the West Bank. It sucks. Has to be Orleans Parish.

I was in NOLA a couple months ago...the French Quarter was absolutely the most filthy part of any city that I have ever been in, the entire city smelled like death especially the French Quarter. I'm still trying to wash the stank off me.
- I was there a couple months ago and it wasn't THAT bad. Certainly no death smell. The only stank is on Bourbon St. but place is shit and everyone knows it.monospaced
- maybe when I was there it was low-tide? But I am telling you it smelled horrific. My sister just got back from symposium and said the smell was bad as well.utopian
- That sucks! I was there the first week of March and it was nice. Only the second time I've ever been.monospaced
- That's called Bourbon St, utopian. We do not go there.sarahfailin
- There's no reason to go to Bourbon St unless you are into heckling tourists with hand grenades, or maybe if you want to mug drunk people.garbage
- Or if you want to go to Krystal, in which case somebody is mocking/mugging you.garbage

I've lived in New Orleans since 2006 and am from Louisiana. New Orleans is a very unique city. Like any large city there are problems, but I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Pros:
∙ The amount of culture in this city is almost overwhelming.
∙ Festivals in and around the city almost every weekend, especially during the summer
∙ Unique neighborhoods (Uptown, Midcity, Bywater, Marigny, Irish Channel, Black Pearl, Carrollton, Central City, French Quarter and more) with their own personalites
∙ If you're into the outdoors, you can't beat this area. You can literally go kayaking, crabbing, fishing, hiking or be at the beach in 30 minutes.
∙ The food
∙ The bars
∙ Definitely a hub for young professionalsThere's much more, but this is a good start...
Cons
∙ Inept city government
∙ Your car will probably fall a part from the isanely shitty streets
∙ Depending on where you live, your house and all of it's possessions could be washed away during hurricane season
∙ Crime (really it's about what you'd expect from a large city in my opinion)
∙ Home prices are sky rocketing. But as someone mentioned, there are plenty of places you can find homes, including Metairie and the West Bank. Gentilly is definitely poised for improvement. I actually work in Gentilly.- lol i used to joke that the streets enforce the speed limits by themselves. hit a pothole going 45mph and your shit is ruined.sarahfailin

I've been there 5 times and love it to death. Yes, Bourbon Street is a frat house tourist trap but even at that, there are great restaurants (Desire) and places to see bands there. There are tons of galleries but the French Quarter is expensive - comparable to Manhattan real estate.
- The Quarter is a tourist trap, check other neighborhoods.garbage

Also if you don't end your nights at Snake and Jake's you haven't really been to New Orleans.
