Numbering Prints

How do you usually number your prints for sale? I have several photos I'm looking to sell and I want them to be limited editions. At first I would do, 1 of 50, 2 of 50, etc..

These 50 will be a specific size print for example 8 x 12. I assume if I decide to sell 16 x 24 I can begin another edition?? So meaning another 50? And what about different post processing? Another set?

Also If I am not matting them but selling unmounted with no white border would you recommend writing in pencil on back of print?

I was thinking a stamp like this would be appropriate:

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Mahalo.

Yes - each edition is numbered separately. Just be wary of having too many editions of the same image/print (regardless of size or processing) as this will devalue the series.
Label on back with clear numbering, date, medium, name is essential for any piece intended for collection.

    thanks fadein.

for medium have you heard the term, "archival pigment print"? I think it is used for describing photographs printed professionally at a lab.

    • I have yes - its a posh way of saying inkjet on expensive paper :)fadein11
    • "archival": acid free paper - either buffered or cotton. "pigment": non dye-based inks, resistant to fading.monNom

Set them x/y as you are, and if you're thinking of doing a load of editions, be as up front about them as you can so that people can make a value judgment without the landscape changing after they've invested in a purchase.

Along the lines of what Fadein says, if you have too many variants within the same line it devalues them overall - particularly if you decide to reprint after an initial run.

At blackdragon we've done a couple of prints with 3 or 4 variants/editions within the release (different media, different colour numbers, different print setups, etc), but we've kept the overall number of prints about the same as we do for the others that may have only had two variant options.

    .

Laterally, we recently did a 'timed release' wherein we kept the gates open for an amount of time, and when we closed them, set the purchases made as the edition quantity. Worked quite well, and we had a lot of positive feedback from it. Sort of 'gamifies' proceedings a wee bit.

    • your approach in the last paragraph is a nice way of doing it.fadein11

    BUMP

to see if anyone has some ideas about writing on the print itself or should i print with border and write on there.

    • On the print. Always.DRIFTMONKEY
    • When it gets framed, seeing the signature is nice.DRIFTMONKEY
    • You mean border as in the periphery of the printed sheet, or on a separate mountboard? Personally I prefer in the margin, not over the print. Just me though.detritus
    • what if print has neither?HijoDMaite

also, convention dictates it is inappropriate to sign with a pen. Use pencil.

    • or, smear with your willy.detritus
    • ^ that too, is acceptable.Gnash

ok i hear you about pencil but will pencil stay on the photo paper?

what if i sell with NO matting/mount and NO white border on actual print?

    • I think the pencil rule is for gicleĆ© and screen prints. Not sure how it would work on photo paper.DRIFTMONKEY

Keeping on reprinting sets, even at different sizes when you've said they are limited edition is kinda cheating your buyers.

Fair enough maybe if you tell them there might be different sizes in the future and this first set is a limited edition of THIS size.

I'd be well pissed if I bought a nice print from someone and was told it was ltd edition for them to then re-release it at a bigger size. If I liked the print I prob would have bought it at the bigger size in the first place if it was available.

    • so you're not into apple products?imbecile
    • apple doesnt claim their stuff is ltd edition though ;)microkorg
    • yea I agree. Thanks microkorkHijoDMaite
