Set them x/y as you are, and if you're thinking of doing a load of editions, be as up front about them as you can so that people can make a value judgment without the landscape changing after they've invested in a purchase.

Along the lines of what Fadein says, if you have too many variants within the same line it devalues them overall - particularly if you decide to reprint after an initial run.

At blackdragon we've done a couple of prints with 3 or 4 variants/editions within the release (different media, different colour numbers, different print setups, etc), but we've kept the overall number of prints about the same as we do for the others that may have only had two variant options.

    .

Laterally, we recently did a 'timed release' wherein we kept the gates open for an amount of time, and when we closed them, set the purchases made as the edition quantity. Worked quite well, and we had a lot of positive feedback from it. Sort of 'gamifies' proceedings a wee bit.

    • your approach in the last paragraph is a nice way of doing it.fadein11
