It always scares me a little that I could lose my passport or credit card and have my trip ruined. What steps do you take to make sure you don't lose your wallet, money, passport, etc while traveling?

use the hotel safe, don't keep your wad all in one pocket

if you go to a motel always leave your wallet on the pillow.

Take a gun with you and point it at any approaching people. Nobody will attempt to take your money.

for not loosing stuff: pack light
for not getting robbed: show respect and don't look like a pussy

2 bank accounts. 1 debit card on person. Transfer small amounts with bank app to card as needed from non debit card account. If they take your card your not losing much at all.

befriend bedouins with gifts of wine and dates and they'll give you shelter from the searing sands at night. also, keep a dagger hidden in your boot to thwart would-be scoundrels who are after your shekels. carry a talisman of your chosen god and sacrifice a goat before embarking on your journey

Ive used hotel safes most of the time. I leave my passport, most of my cash and spare CC. You have no worries if you stay at a hotel with average to above reviews.
When I don't trust the place I do carry my passport with my all my cash (large bills) on my person ALL THE TIME (front pockets). Use local bank to break large bills.

xerox all your ID's, cards and such, send copies to a trusted friend, keep copies yourself, in case your wallet is stolen/missing, you can quickly cancel your cards and get a new set of ID's faster....
I've never had stuff stolen, travelled a LOT over the years, often very roughly on busses and trains in Asia....Moldero's right, the right attitude seems to help prevent bad situations when travelling....
I did have a friend who had her identity stolen as somebody opened her backpack and stole her purse inside when she was on her way to work in Chicago...

That's interesting...so it's worth making photocopies of everything? Does a photocopy serve as official proof of identity in a situation where you lost your ID?
- Helps out. Also making copies and putting them in different luggage(s) helps as a back up to if now of them gets stolen/lost.TheeOtherJuan

I used one of these when I know I was going through somewhere a little sketch: https://www.corporatetravelsafet… and like scarabin had a snatch; old card and some low denomination bills should I get mugged

Always carry your passport in your front pocket. In fact, carry everything in your front pocket. Don't use your debit card. Scan your passport/visa before you leave. If you lose your documents while on your trip, images of the originals are better than nothing.
If you're somewhere where you don't know the language, have your hotel arrange all your taxi rides.
Take photos of every taxi number that you ride. I once left my phone in a taxi in Turkey. My colleague coincidentally snapped a photo of the taxi number. Miraculously, I was able to recover my phone. Now I have many photos of taxi numbers.
Don't carry camera bags -- irresistible for pickpockets. In 2 seconds, they can cut the strap and run.
Never go on a solicited taxi ride -- if someone walks up to you in the airport and asks you if you need a ride, just say no. Only use official airport or hotel services for car rides.
Make a google doc of important contact info numbers -- your credit card company, airline, etc. You can refer to the document in case you lose everything else.
