Always carry your passport in your front pocket. In fact, carry everything in your front pocket. Don't use your debit card. Scan your passport/visa before you leave. If you lose your documents while on your trip, images of the originals are better than nothing.

If you're somewhere where you don't know the language, have your hotel arrange all your taxi rides.

Take photos of every taxi number that you ride. I once left my phone in a taxi in Turkey. My colleague coincidentally snapped a photo of the taxi number. Miraculously, I was able to recover my phone. Now I have many photos of taxi numbers.

Don't carry camera bags -- irresistible for pickpockets. In 2 seconds, they can cut the strap and run.

Never go on a solicited taxi ride -- if someone walks up to you in the airport and asks you if you need a ride, just say no. Only use official airport or hotel services for car rides.

Make a google doc of important contact info numbers -- your credit card company, airline, etc. You can refer to the document in case you lose everything else.
