seen some good demon mask tattoos on calfs, they stand out from far, theres a lot of different kind of demons kinds/meanings, like tengu etc
check em out, there's a lot to Japanese tattoos/techniques, if you can, get a Japanese dude to do a Japanese tattoo.
They use different inks (flatter colors), special techniques in their line separations, things like that, they do look flatter (compared to normal techniques) in the beginning, but end up looking better and lasting longer in the end because of the japanese techniques.my dude from 12-ish years ago 'Horiryu' from Tokyo is based in LA now, but he does tour the US and EU a lot, hes hard to book now but if you can do it, do. according to his apprentices, back in Tokyo he tattooed a lot of the Yakuza bosses personally. hes extremely heavy handed though, dude was carving in my bones.
another guy that did part of one of my sleeves is Horishow out of Fukuoka-shi, Fukuoka, Japan, he has a way softer touch, he doesn't get out of JP much but he does tour on occasion.

Is the area behind the knee more painful?

^
i havent done that, but from my experience, any area that isnt exposed to much, like around the arm pit are tender as fuck, or areas that have a lot of tendons like the elbow swell up big time.

Behind the knee will be a bitch with the healing process though because you'll be bending the area lots so will most likely need to go back for touchups also.
