- well, the article's leading me on... "live-music-problem... seems the prob is with certain folks non? and sad artists.prophetone

What about the music just blows monkey balls?

The nut:
"What's is the best way to stave off this inevitable boredom and really engage with what we've dedicated our night to come see? How do we reclaim the live experience for what it's worth? It's really simple, actually: Dance. Give in to that impulse. Don't be scared. Go ahead and channel a little Bowie. I'm looking at you, stoic guy with the blank expression and girl who can't see over the person in front of you. If you dance — and I'm not talking about timid, mindless knee bobbing — all of the encumbrances of the structured venue show will rescind into the periphery and you will enjoy yourself and the music in the realest way possible. A new world will reveal itself and you will be free. So next time dance and dance like you mean it, or keep dancing if that may be the case. In fact, it even works particularly well when the music is live and you're surrounded by other people in a confined space."

^ but...but...maybe one shouldn't have to TELL people to dance, but be able to MAKE them dance.

Stop saying ''may be the music is bad" ... No!
Teens are really hooked to their iPhones and it's the Internet generation: Everything now, everything fast, attention span extremely limited, skip skip skip - click click click!
I saw people playing Candy Crush during a show. I mean. It's not even funny anymore. We have a problem.
- < Its an Addiction epidemic. Its going to cost them hugely in the future when they can't be bothered to learn anything important.sem
- Cost us also, as they will be the generation we rely on as doctors and such...we're fucked.sem
- Maybe Candy Crush is better than pop music.********
- So why paying 45$ to go play Candy Crush at a concert if the music is that bad?benfal99

People are not living their life in the moment. They live their life for Twitter and Instagram... Going to a show without posting stuff on Twitter, Instagram and else would mean they never attend that said show in the eyes of their "friends".
- benfal990
also, if the music were that bad, those people wouldnt pay to go see that music! That argument is invalid.

That picture of Jack White sums it up for me. Totally Overrated.

"WHY AREN'T THEY LOOKING AT MEEEEEEEEEE???"
- Jack White, crybaby

Seriously, there is also a problem with everyone over-exaggerating every thing they see, and getting angry about things that don't even exist. This is a great example.
"Everyone is always on their phone! No one is watching the show!"
If I go to a show, there's a good chance I just went to hang out, or see some friends and kind of check out the show. I'm not necessarily a super fan of the artist.
But even if I am a super fan, I'll probably be texting people a bit when we get there so we can find each other. Maybe texting some before we leave to go somewhere else. At some point the artist's set will get a bit boring, so maybe I take an instagram or check what other people are up to. It's no big deal. So maybe I look at my phone a few (or ten) times during the performance.
So, Jack White (and the rest of us) look at this crowd of people where 10% to 15% of them are looking down at their phones at any given time and we're all like, "OMG KIDS THESE DAYS ARE SO FUCKED UP WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOCIETY".
But really, it's not that big of a deal.

WTF are you doing at a show man! Go to a fuking bar!
- "Hey man, we're all going to this show on Friday, you want to come?" "Yeah, ok, could be fun. Something to do. Sure."********

People at shows for texting, chatting, see some friend and "kind of check out the show" are exactly the kind of people I want to punch when I go see shows!

A lot of kids these days are abandoning rock music for electronic or simply staying home. It's hard to remember the last time there was a band that felt like they were really doing something new and exciting. Maybe Animal Collective was the last one that was really innovative.
A lot of big bands these days are just making money off a legacy from years or even decades ago. They release an album every few years which isn't really that good, and then go on a tour where they charge $100 a ticket.

I must say that my actions depend a lot on the venue. If I go to the symphony, you can bet I'm not taking my phone out and certainly not talking. Doesn't have to be an orchestra, though. If I saw Jack White or someone like that performing at a nice theatre, where attention is expected, then I would adhere to the customary behaviour of the venue. And if it's at a giant rock venue? Then whatever. It's a rock show. It's supposed to be a bit of a party.

What? Artists who perform at arenas deserve to have people talking/texting during the show. Arenas sound like shit and are a terrible way to see a band. The only reason the artist is playing an arena is because they can pack more people in and make more money. It's pretty rude to the true music fan. Why should I sit at perfect attention when they can't even be bothered to play in a theatre or concert hall.

went to a black angels concert and they can really fucking jam. the audience = just standing there staring at me as i shake it and jumped around. kids today are lame.
- Yeah. I wonder if people would cut loose more often if we didn't post everything on youtube for a laugh later!!********

Went to a Smashing Pumpkins show in SF a few years ago. The venue made extremely strong efforts to ensure only fans bought tickets and attended, and squashed any chance of ticket scalping. I was so stoked to see this legendary rock group with fans who bought tickets personally.
They started rocking, hard, and as we have done at every rock show for the last 25 years, my friend and I started dancing. We were moving, and we wanted to move closer to the front, and we were hoping to get the crowd going.
Nope, the crowd wasn't having it. They were all concerned only with standing still and taking pictures. It was infuriating, and they pretty much killed the vibe. I was pissed. This is a legendary group and the fans were so, meh.

I went to this festival and it was super huge but everyone was just sitting around on the grass talking to each other. Occasionally someone would get up and dance, but pretty much everyone just sat around. Kids these days just don't know how to have fun.

- so out of context. argument invalid. you're comparing a 2hours show with a 3 days show and blah blah blahbenfal99
