I lived in Oslo during three years about 10 years ago. I really like it but the city is pretty small and there isn't that much great architecture (it's getting better though) or amazing landscape surrounding it. The east part of the country doesn't have as much to offer as the west and North coast. Bergen, Stavanger and Tromsö are all really nice picturesque small cities. Driving around is probably a good idea but remember that it's a crazy expensive country the gas is at least twice the price in US and accommodation/food/everything is about 30-50% more expensive then the US. That being said I highly recommend it.

when i was a kid i visited there. we took a ferry from svenska over to oslo. i only really remember driving from oslo to bergen and how it took about 10 hours over the mountains. then again, my dad didn't know how to drive in them and made our brakes smoke.
