This is interesting. The "I don't want to think" category of products is a huge market.

For all the people who don't want to use their phone or don't have a phone capable of running the app? This is more like a home appliance than an app. It also means they have one single platform to develop for rather than the hundreds of various mobile platforms available.

looks too much like a pregnancy test stick but if it was available in my city I would totally want one.

I think the standalone device is a nice touch. If it's successful I imagine they would make an app as well, but this is a good family tool and can probably stand up to some serious abuse (in the hands of kids, in the kitchen, bottom of a bag), and probably won't need a recharge very often.
Living in NYC, ordering groceries online is a normal thing for many people, including myself. I can see this taking off in dense cities.

Amazon already has an app with scanning tech.
Amazon doesn't make the best investments. Their goal is dominance more than margins.
- That app has nothing to do with Dash yet. I would disagree on their investment success too.monospaced

maybe its for old people

Is the plan to give this away for free? I can see people latching on if that's the case, but not if you're expected to pay for it.

I suspect this is bad for competition. Obviously this thing will always offer products from the big companies that can pay Amazon- Good point. I would never use it as I prefer to buy my groceries fresh at specialty local shops.CuriousGeorge

@Pixter, not sure why you're saying that. Amazon Fresh collaborates with local companies & neighborhood shops. This isn't a device for shopping at Amazon, it's for their Fresh service.

Maybe I'm wrong, but they are not clear about how it works. For example we see a woman scanning the bar code of some product at her house. That exactly product/brand is what goes on the list, right?
- just watch the video, that's exactly what happens, or you can just tell it with your voicemonospaced
- Well, then it is definitely bad for competitionPixter

"... Did your kids just eat the last of the cereal?"
Then go to the supermarket and buy some more, you lazy bitch. It's the least you can do for your poor kids, since you've decided you're too lazy to make them a proper breakfast.

The people in the video don't look like they live in a food desert.
If they live in NYC, most likely, there's a supermarket under 10 blocks away.
- If you live in NYC you know how shitty it is grocery shopping and carrying a gallon a few blocks.monospaced

But avoiding human contact is what really sells it for me.

- Can they fix this problem?omahadesigns

- Why should THEY fix it?ORAZAL

This is just a machine that lets an 8 year old get a delivery of oreo's and junk food and run up their parent's credit card.
- freedom0
Do you have to tip the delivery man or is it like UPS?

I think it's an interesting futuristic idea. And could be great for busy families perhaps.
Though I'd never use something like this. Technology shouldn't just be a thing that keeps us in our homes or in the office staring at screens. Rather, it would be great to find ways to connect people with their local producers, farmers and markets.
- Barcodes on produce?freedom
- you don't need barcodes, you just say what you wantmonospaced
