Had this idea 6+ months ago when heading back home to Montana on a fishing trip. Wanted a cool hat to rep where I actually grew up... was surprised this idea wasn't out there.
So I made some Montana caps and people liked them so much I had to make some more and now... launched this officially.
They basically are Vintage License Plate Baseball Caps for the states of the US.
Only have 9 states right now, but looking into doing a crowd funding site to help get the other states out sooner most likely.
Check it out.
Was great to learn how to take a product from concept to fruition especially after working on the advertising side of things most of the time. When it's your own product you tend to do things much different. I think it actually would be a good thing for designers to do this. It makes you realize what is important in design and marketing and what is not. It also gives you some respect as tot he money your clients spend. When it's your own, it is a much different ball game.

...it is a much different ball (cap) game.
; )
Tofslie, excellent personal project coming to fruition; you're "bringing it" and not JUST "singing it".
*thumbsup*
- Also, love the vintage picked collection: http://www.gasolinec…ideaist

Nice, these are pretty cool. I'm at the very early stages of planning products, an online shop, payment structure for commissioned art and photography, etc. for my Expedition Bureau site. Can't even imagine how much work it will be but really excited to start focusing on it very soon.
- Thankfully with todays services like shopify or squarespace, it helps a ton to make it easier.Tofslie

what are the legalities of using those logos?
- No real legal issues, they are old plates. usually state stuff is public... If anything maybe the art work, butTofslie
- since they are older, no real art work. The new plates would prob run into art work problems.Tofslie
- I was talking more about the logos, not the plates.dbloc
- Which logos? You mean the vintage hats? I dont make those. They are actually real..Tofslie
- vintage caps from the 80s. I purchase them from thrift or online and resell. Pick the good onesTofslie
- oh got it. that makes sensedbloc

Cool stuff. Snapbacks are much cooler than Velcro Closure though.
- most of them are snapback, the carhartt caps are veclro though, which is more standard for those type of work capsTofslie

Well done man.
You said you made some Montana ones. How many did you do? And how did you start selling them? Just wondering how everything started.
Cheers
- I basically had a minimum run of like 48 patches made, had them sewn on some nice blank caps as prototypesTofslie
- then just started selling/giving them away to see peoples reactionsTofslie
- its the only hat ive worn that people ask about consistently, so i knew i was onto something.Tofslie
- nobody ever asks me about my hat, now its like 3 times a weekTofslie

these are sweet. If I didn't look like a huge-headed ass in a cap I'd buy one
- stoplying0
These are excellent. Can I ask how you shot the photos of the hats?
- Tofslie0
@stoplying I basically have this set up http://www.amazon.com/MyStudio-P…
But I actually have a huge skylight... like 6x6 in my office that gives amazing light in the day. So i dont even have to use a lighting kit.
then just have a template to normalize the backgrounds between shots and a bit of simple photoshop
I use a high end mirrorless dslr with a 50mm
quick, simple and quick edits in photoshop
