Hi,
Looking to get a Wacom 13" HD to get hands on with Illustrator/Photoshop etc. But seen as you guys are the professionals I figured I'd get your input first.
Just want something affordable but with a great UX. But having never used one I'm new to it all.
My only experience in using anything remotely similar would be the Paper app on an iPad but that wasn't the most responsive thing. And its important that I can get detailed work done using Adobe software.
I figured one with a screen would make it easier for a rookie who might not have the best coordination but would there be something major I'd benefit from on one of a similar price range without?
Thanks in advance for your time :) ps, couldn't think of good Wacom based pun for title, forgive me.

Can't even use a mouse anymore and can't imagine not having one. Have the Intuos 5 (have the wireless option but never use it). So much faster and so much more control it's ridiculous.
There was a HUGE learning curve though (for me at least). A solid two weeks before I fully-adjusted. About a week to get used to it, and then another week figuring out how to hold the pen while typing, getting used to knowing where the buttons ON the pen are at, etc.
I don't use the buttons or scrollers on the tablet portion though, just use the keyboard. Anyone here use the buttons, wheel a lot?
- great help thank you :) convinced me to defo get one.sem

I feel lucky, since I found it pretty easy to adjust.

I personally really like the Wacoms that I have used but if you are looking for some alternatives that are more cost effective check Ray's reviews http://frenden.com/tagged/review…
A coworker bought one of the monoprice tablets based on his site and really liked it, but I haven't tried one myself.

in general the closer the size of the wacom to the size of your screen, the more comfortable and accurate you can work. i'm using wacoms since 1992 and never used a mouse on any of my computers. neither ever used any of the buttons or wheel on the tablet. found the flip switch on the pen very useful though. i gave introduction to a couple of people - i'd say you get used the tablet-screen coordination i an hour and internalize it within a couple of days. right now i'm using intuos 5 touch. for my part the touch function is an unnecessary gimmick - however i'm no iPad or iPhone user.

I love them, but as soon as I put it away for any reason, it ends up staying away for too long. Then I hook it up again eventually, and I realize that although it's rad, but it works like shit with an external display, and I have to switch to a mouse repeatedly to work, and I get frustrated and stop using it again.
If I had one main display that I did everything on, and the resolution matched the ratio of the wacom area, and nothing changed and I never took my laptop other places, I'd probably use one full-time.
- just use one big main display and take advantage of mission control to divide your desktopsfourth
- I need more room than one display, unfortunately. Hmmm, I'll consider some changesmonospaced

do it, and for christ's sake people program your expresskeys/radial menus–it's half the reason why I use a wacom!

Yes.
depends on what you do, you may not need the biggest one.

I assume you are talking about the Cintiq. Everyone's response seems to be thinking you are talking about a drawing tablet.
I have the 13 HD and have been using it for half a year. For me, the size is fine, basically the surface area of 8.5x11 paper which is about as big as I would draw on in real life. Plus it doesn't take up much room on my desk. The larger models, besides being way more expensive are desk hogs. Plus, it is way cheaper.
That said, the 1080p screen is crisp but the interface elements are pretty small in photoshop. Hasn't bothered me though.
The actual resolution of the two larger screen sizes is still 1080p, so you aren't gaining any extra workspace, just bigger pixels.
My only issues are some minor light bleed on one of the edges which I can only see when the screen isn't displaying an image. That and I think they need to update the drivers for Mavericks, as sometimes I get a bug or two.

absolutely yes. you wouldn't paint with a brick would you?
- oh you're talking about a cintiqscarabin

honestly, I wouldn't go the cintiq route, I prefer the intuos. Much more responsive (The Cintiq I tried had some delays, it was an old one, maybe they fixed that up) and way, way cheaper.
- I think Intuous is better for photo retouching and general design stuff. Cintiq is way better for drawing/illustration work.nikdaum

Thanks, it will be used for drawing and illustration so think the Cintiq would be better acording to Nikdaum.
I was confused though, is the screen 13.3" or the whole device?
Its already in the post now but comes with 40 day return policy incase I don't like it etc.

Cintiq 13 HD arrived today! its so good! I stupidly spent 5mins looking for the collaboration tab on OSX before I realised I had to touch the pen on the Wacom but yeah...love it.
Just a quick question for you users. How do you have your displays setup?
- Mirrored? so Photoshop pop-ups such as new layer confirmation etc don't pop up on your main screen without you noticing etc? (or is there a work around on that?)
- 2nd screen, more work space? would make more sense, even having the main with inspirational work up etc, but I need a problem fix for the reason why I currently have it mirrored.
