Taking a long time to make does not equal good art. Your concern is purely about craft. Maybe look at some of the artists statements and look into why they are making what they make and you might have a different level of appreciation.

you don't have to like the now. you could feel only for what was. and what will be is likely what was once was. the only constant, is you.

It's all brainwashing in the sense that it's all cultural and relative. If minimal modernist approach is empirically better, why didn't people think of it earlier? It's just cultural influence/conditioning that ends up influencing you to view things a certain way. People 20-30 years from now will think they have something better, but really it will just be different.

Who was the late photo-realist that turned his attention to simplified abstract works?

Appreciating art is supposed to be subjective. If you don't enjoy the main stream art, or you do, doesn't mean to be brainwashed. Probably more honest to say, "I really hate Van Gogh" even though the majority of art viewers would disagree.
I also suggest watching art documentaries, where the artist actually speaks about the process or art. It really helps me pick apart what I like about what I see, and what I hate. Art 21 is a great series. http://www.art21.org
Tough thing is that going to a museum or gallery, the art sometimes is still too far away from the viewer to grasp, and most of the times, the story or the process is much more interesting than the end product.

I don't "get" Basquiat either.

There is no logic in the art world.
The simpler the work, the more BS you can write in a PR release.
A Rothko is worth $60 million for no good reason.
- Shows your ignorance of Rothko. His work isn't simple and was highly original.matski

Thought this was a good discussion.
I feel as individuals you have intuition, but you also have culture as influence, and also your own personal experience. depends what is stronger in you as an individual.
However art being a market place doesnt mean it matters how good you are. It matters who you know, trends and how rich your friends are in determining your art prices.

Though I don't agree with the ridiculous valuations

Art isn't something you see with your eyes. I do appreciate what the OP is saying though.

The woman crying and the woman on the wolf for me are great and I enjoy them, the rest I find nothing in them which would make me stop for more than a glance. Although the guy who painted the massive doll clearly has talent.
