Appreciating art is supposed to be subjective. If you don't enjoy the main stream art, or you do, doesn't mean to be brainwashed. Probably more honest to say, "I really hate Van Gogh" even though the majority of art viewers would disagree.
I also suggest watching art documentaries, where the artist actually speaks about the process or art. It really helps me pick apart what I like about what I see, and what I hate. Art 21 is a great series. http://www.art21.org
Tough thing is that going to a museum or gallery, the art sometimes is still too far away from the viewer to grasp, and most of the times, the story or the process is much more interesting than the end product.
