So with LIGO they spent $620 million total to build and upgrade the thing to make this observation of gravitational waves.
I was about to write that there's no practical application for this observation, but after a little more reading, I'm understanding that this is the beginning of a whole new field of astronomy-- gravitational astronomy.
This first observation of gravitational waves is really only the first successful application of the first-generation gravitational detector, LIGO. The Einstein Telescope is a Third Generation gravitational wave detector still in the design phase. Could actually be really useful for observing different kinds of objects in distant space.

- Actually the ocean bends like that because of the earth's curvaturemekk
- That anyone in the 21st century believes the Earth is flat is mind-boggling. I need to wash the stupid off me.Continuity

- Err ... that's me ... humourless cunt, right here ...
¬_¬Continuity - Oh, I see, now. I'd just like to note that I don't think you're stupid or that you believe the Earth is flat, scarabin. Not by a long shot.Continuity

The Anthropocene is functionally and stratigraphically distinct from the Holocene
http://www.sciencemag.org/conten…Abstract
Human activity is leaving a pervasive and persistent signature on Earth. Vigorous debate continues about whether this warrants recognition as a new geologic time unit known as the Anthropocene. We review anthropogenic markers of functional changes in the Earth system through the stratigraphic record. The appearance of manufactured materials in sediments, including aluminum, plastics, and concrete, coincides with global spikes in fallout radionuclides and particulates from fossil fuel combustion. Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles have been substantially modified over the past century. Rates of sea-level rise and the extent of human perturbation of the climate system exceed Late Holocene changes. Biotic changes include species invasions worldwide and accelerating rates of extinction. These combined signals render the Anthropocene stratigraphically distinct from the Holocene and earlier epochs.- yes this is upsetting.sarahfailin
- Pussies.
Each and every one of us has had a more long-lasting impact on the Earth's future than any creature ever, before.

A guide to the COP21 climate talks- more to do with politics than real science but hey.yurimon
- also religion is involved.uan
- sigh, no mention of methane gas rising from the oceans as bigger threat. guess you cant tax the oceans.yurimon
- tax is good trigger for the industries to adopt measures. they got plenty of time to do it voluntary, now they need a financial gain impulse.uan
- the methane thing is due to the unfreezing of permafrost, it's related to the ongoing warming of the planet.uan
- these measure still based on control of energy, check out the movie gashole.yurimon

- I don't get your point.
yes, graphs are being exaggerated, we know that. check the co2 in atmosphere graph...that one is not exaggerated and is real.uan - the deforestation of the planet. real.
do we have alternatives by now? yes, some of them and they are getting better. it's time to implement them.uan - the oil industry is probably to blame for not investing enough in this clean energy technologies for decades.uan

- Gashole is fantastic. I don't know for sure any way but stopping conscious mass pollution can only be a good thing, even if it's not the/only cause.MrT
