Hybrid Drive?

The old-fashioned hard drive in my MacBook Pro is going bad, so I'm thinking of upgrading to an SSD, or a hybrid drive.
Has anybody tried a hybrid drive? They're certainly a lot less expensive than the SSDs.

jesus - apple hard drives... 2 gone in this house in 6 months.
- Apple doesn't make HDsmonospaced
- Jesus does though in WD's mexican factorymoldero

I put a hybrid drive in my '06 mbp and it makes it feel at least 3 years newer.
...so only 4 years old now :/
- Hope you didn't buy an Apple brand HD, those things suck.monospaced
- nope, went with one of these: http://www.newegg.co…akiersky
- Those are what Apple puts in their Macs, basicallymonospaced

Heck yes. I have a Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB, and it gives me about a 35 second start up time on my computer. Way cheaper than SSD, and you get most of the benefits and way more space.
Upgrading your hard drive is the single best thing you can do to increase your computer's performance. The only difficult thing is reinstalling your operating system, which isn't that hard if you've got the disc.

Get the Momentous if you're not a person who likes to go in and mess with computer. What I did was get a SSD drive, removed the DVD burner and put in a adapter from OWC. Then I put in the old drive. I have two drives in my laptop now, the main SSD and the old drive. Space and speed.

So I ordered an SSD. I figured the reliability would be a big help.

I have a seagates 750g
it does make everything faster a bit.

if you need huge space. go hybrid. other wise, go ssd.

Another suggestion (dude, said the same thing years ago!)
1. SDD as your main drive, for speed.
"CFD" cranks out some very, very fast ones for cheap.
Like this one: http://www.cfd.co.jp/ssd/s6tnhg5…
From my experience intels are more reliable, albeit slightly more pricey and not as fast.2. Then replace that ancient optical drive with an extra hdd bay for storage. Like optibay:
Put a regular 1tb drive in there. There's good ones around for 60-70$.

I think SSDs are cheap enough to justify not going hybrid. You can also have an external for bigger files, or use the extra internal bay like people have suggested. I've been using the Crucial m4 without issue for about half a year.

^ SSDs aren't cheap. i like the setup with a SSD as OS and "working files" drive, with a normal drive for storage. both my laptop and office server is set up like this. don't need SSDs for storage.
- pango0
now would you replace the optic drive with SSD and use it as OS drive? or is the connection from optic drive slower?

Wow! Just finished installing the SSD! It's like having a whole new much, much faster computer! Even real pig programs like Photoshop open nearly instantly. It's incredible!
The SSD is a 250GB Samsung. Cost me $180. I also had to get a cable to clone the old drive, and that cost another $20. So, for $200, I'm getting performance like I've never had before!
Even with Creative Cloud, Logic, Reason and Native Instruments Komplete on it, I still have about 50GB left. (I have a big hard drive for storage of sample files and iTunes.)
But this thing flies. I should have done this even before my HD started to sputter!
:-)
Happy boobs!
- What computer are you using? I'm thinking of upgrading my Macbook OR buying a new one. Maybe an SSD and more RAM would extend the life of my MacbookJosev
- RAM would extend the life of my MacbookJosev
- I've got a MacBook Pro from 2010. 2.4 GHz Intel i5, 4GB RAM.boobs
- Same as mine, I'm totally doing this!

RAM & SSD. That is all.

I've got a 250gb SSD in my little Lenovo x201 and have been thinking about replacing it for something larger.
Like you Boobs I use it for music making and at the moment I have Software etc installed on the SSD and keep my workign song files and sample libraries etc on an external drive.
I am scared that one day i'll lose or damage the external then all my WIP will be lost so been thinking about a 1TB internal. Not sure whether to shell out the £400+ for an SSD or £100 for Hybrid Drive.

My understanding is that the SSDs have a big advantage in durability, which was another factor in my choice. My hard drive was failing, after 3 years. I've had other hard drives that failed. In fact, that's the point at which I've bailed on most of my previous computers. But I've never had the circuitry, or CPU give out on a computer. And the SSD is a lot more like a circuit or CPU than it is like a hard drive. No moving mechanisms. Just electrons moving around, I guess.

Same here. I have ended up switching to new comps when the HD's have gone on older ones haha.
SSD's are more reliable BUT one drawback is that if they fail they do so without prior warning and fail spectacularly! Whereas with standard HD's they will usually start glitching and hiccuping before going kaput so usually gives you time to get your stuff backed up.
Another drawback seemingly of SSD's is the lifetime of data on them. Some cheaper ones won't store data forever. Just like cheap SD cards you might go to your camera that you havent used for a year, take out the SD card and a number of the images will be corrupt or gone.
Whichever I buy SSD or SSHD, i'll also be keeping a regular backup going onto an external drive too.

I have a Time Machine for backups.
