I invested heavily in 3D systems — the company that makes the Cube printers @ www.cubify.com — back in October, and I'm glad I did.

my gf's stepfather, an industrial designer, has a big 3d printer at home, that he modified. he prints prototypes as well as parts for personal projects (he printed an entire, fully functional motorised glider with a 3 meter wingspan that he designed for his rc airplane hobby). he also used it to design and print a prototype for a telecoms part that will set him and his entire family up for life.
as a consumer product, over time as the technology becomes cheaper, it's gonna blow up.

The "big picture" goes way beyond plastic fabrication. The real money behind "additive manufacturing" is how it will be used in large industries and government agencies. Think medical devices, which are already a huge part of the revenue (in-ear implants, prosthetics, etc), and the airline industry.
GE invested several million into 3D printers that fabricate out of metal and can make lighter parts for planes, resulting in lighter aircraft and a huge savings in fuel and manufacturing. ExOne just went public and is in this sector, and is also another potential investment for anyone taking this seriously.
The fact of the matter is, like sine, said above, "it's gonna blow up." The other fact is, it already has. It's just a matter of time before we see its real impacts. If anyone is an investor, this is the moment to get in.

And for anyone making new small products, like phone cases or toys, gadgets and such, they no longer need to outsource so far to get a prototype or mold made. For individuals wanting to get into product creation and couldn't before, due to the huge obstacles and economics of the traditional pipeline, this will let them play. As this picks up, I see a future where America actually makes things again. That's a future I can get on board with.

reminds me a lot of the book 'freedom(tm) by Daniel Suarez...
it really is the begining of a brand new lease on life for makers from all nations...people think that globalization changed manufacturing in a big way (and it did) but this is going to change things even more....
