my gf's stepfather, an industrial designer, has a big 3d printer at home, that he modified. he prints prototypes as well as parts for personal projects (he printed an entire, fully functional motorised glider with a 3 meter wingspan that he designed for his rc airplane hobby). he also used it to design and print a prototype for a telecoms part that will set him and his entire family up for life.
as a consumer product, over time as the technology becomes cheaper, it's gonna blow up.
