Ever get anything really positive out of a software upgrade in the last 5 years?
Did you ever get a net productivity improvement? Did you ever get a new feature that really changed your work? Did you ever get a big increase in speed?
It seems like, more and more, I only upgrade to maintain compatibility with clients and subcontractors.
But, honest to God, I can't think of anything I'm doing now that I couldn't have done just as easily with CS1 or CS2. And if CS1 would run on the computer I have now, it would be speedier than what I'm using now!
Maybe my memory isn't completely clear here...

Good point! Lord knows I love Komplete 8, and I'll upgrade that as soon as I can.
But really I was talking about design and office software. Basically Adobe and Microsoft, and a few Apple apps.

If I had CS6, I'd be able to open clients CS6 without the vague concern they're fucking up somehow.
That's, literally, it for me.
Fuck Adobe.

content-aware-fill is useful...
Lightroom 4 is miles better than Lightroom 3 in terms of brushes for dodging, burning, small area contrast and color tweeking,etc...
but yes, I don't see any reason to keep updating Illustrator or Indesign....

Nothing from the big programs like Creative Suite, except with the stroke width feature in illy CS5. What I never understood is in LR in fullscreen mode the menu bar automatically drops down when you bring the pointer up. I was psyched on the fullscreen mode in CS6 but you have to cycle through the screen modes to get to the menu bar... why??
I do get excited for updates with smaller developers like codekit, espresso, etc

I like the darker screen of CS6. It makes me feel like I am using something new.

That's what I'm saying! $600/year/cpu for an upgrade that doesn't help much at all!

I went from CS3 to CS6 last year, that was a huge step. Espresso (WYSIYYG CSS Editor) made some significant improvements in the last version too.

Cinema4D updates are great
Adobe ones have been garbage since CS4

The iPad authoring in InDesign CS5.5/6.
And content aware fill does speed up work on some projects.

my 4 year old macbook pro was slow as fuck but most of all the battery would last about half an hour at most. After upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion, not only is it fast again (expected) the battery now lasts over 2 hours ...

...but in terms of CS upgrades, not really other than compatibility.
I do really like the new crop in CS6 though.

Photoshop crop tool, gradients on path, transparency as part of gradients, minor 3D functionality in Photoshop. Type features in After Effects, The way AE works with Cinema 4D, The 3D camera tracking in After Effects, Layer effects on Groups, not just layers in Photoshop, The pattern editing in Illustrator,
Most people don't use Bridge but it's not piggish and slow anymore.
I can't say much about InDesign because I don't use it much and don't like it much to begin with. It's so slow and hogs way more RAM than it should.
- Bridge is faster? That would be nice. I'd use it way more if it wasn't sooo slow (CS5)Gnash
